Waiting for a new kilt -- review to follow
I popped for the $45 last night and ordered a Black Stewart from KL Kilts' eBay store. Lots of positive eBay feedback and I've wanted an inexpensive Black Stewart for some time. They have a leather/buckle closure on either side, belt loops and there's no velcro involved. It sounds to me like it's comparable to a SWK thrifty but with the closures and belt loops. And I thought, at that price, it's hard to go wrong.
Since I haven't seen a KL Kilts review and didn't turn up anything in the search function, I'll let you know what it's like once I get it.

There are almost too many small e-bay-based shops selling kilts to have reviews on all of them. But I am looking forward to learning how you fared and if you got your money's worth. Any review is a positive contribution to this community. I hope you'll be happy with your purchase.

I've sent a mess of questions to KiltLifterKilts about the fabric, pleating, and other stuff. I'll post the answers if I receive any.

I got a reply from KiltLifter Kilts (KL Kilts):
The less expensive kilts are made from a synthetic polyester blend--looks and feels like wool.
They are a medium weight and the drop is the standard 24 inches. They are made from about four to five yards of material.
Knife pleated to a stripe.
They are not hemmed.
Pleats release at the waist instead of being sewn to the fell.

These two answers make me wish I'd done my due diligence better. I may take one look at this and have a kilt for sale.

Black Stewart is a beautiful tartan! Perhaps you can sew the pleats down at home?

It isn't at all difficult to hand sew the pleats to the fell. Just takes a bit of time and patience. Since labour is the major cost in production, it is probably why the kilt is as inexpensive as it is.
Looking forward to the review.

I have a sister who is amazingly handy with a needle and thread. Can anyone link me to a tutorial on how to sew down the pleats, or is it something she should be able to figure out on her own?
This is the sister for whom I purchased Barb's kilt making book and downloaded/printed Barb's/Matt's tutorial on box pleated kilts. She's disabled and is always looking for a way to make some extra cash. Darn the luck, she may have to make a couple of "practice" kilts before she tries to sell them. Wonder who could take those off her hands...
