    Weight of SWK Heavyweight wool?

Does anyone know, has it been discussed before, etc.?

What the fabric weight for the SWK Heavyweight kilts is?

    16oz?
    14oz?

    none of the above?

    Thanks in advance.

I don't own one, but I moved some buckles on one for a friend and I would say no more than 13 oz. It has a softer hand (feel) than your average Scottish woven wool. I think its Marino(sp?) wool and it is usually softer.

Definitely no more than 13 oz. I have two. It's heavyweight by comparison with the other SWK kilts, but not as heavy as a 16 0z. tank. Still a great value for the money.

I have two SWK shadow tartans and a Black Watch. Comparing them to a 13-oz fabric, they feel about the same weight.

The Black Watch used to be listed as Merino wool, but the Web site no longer mentions that. I've handled 4 SWK wool kilts, and all of them are nice fabric.

I have only one SWK Heavyweight, a size 38 black shadow. The material in it measures 266" by 24" and the whole kilt weighs 54 ounces. Defining one fabric yard as 56" by 36" I compute 3-1/6 fabric yards at 17 ounces per yard. If you subtract the weight of the non-woolen materials, which I can only guesstimate, you will probably get about 15 ounces per yard.

I'm not going to debate the statistical significance of n=1, but I rather suspect it exceeds that of n=0. There really is no predicting where you're going to find an engineer, is there?

Mine feels like a 13 oz. If truth be told, I wouldn't want more than that. It keeps me plenty warm, and moves wonderfully.

If I remember correctly the last time this came up - The Wizard or someone did some weighing & calculations and came up with 12 to 13 oz wool.

Thanks for the insight, I've been saving my pennies to buy some tartan fabric, and since I like the feel and movement of my 2 SWK heavyweights, I was wondering if I should buy 14oz or 16oz fabric.

Sounds like 14oz it is then, I will finally be able to make my own Young tartan kilt in military box pleated style.

I think most mills weave their tartan in 10/11 oz., 13oz., or 16oz. Thats the usual weights for light, medium and heavy. So unless someone is advertising 14oz, you are more likley to find either 13oz. or 16oz.
