Henderson Muted
I'm looking for sources of the Henderson Muted tartan. I have two kilted skirts, modern Henderson and Ancient Henderson. I saw a Henderson wearing a muted a few years ago. The green was repalced with brown I believe. Does anyone know where I can possibly get some of the fabric (worsted wool of course).

Go up to the link for Scotweb. Search their "Materials". You will find it in muted as well as everything else. Actually pretty reasonable.

Welcome to the forum. I would suggest contacting XMTS member Matt Newsome with the Scottish Tartans Museum.

I really don't know where to get it from. I am a member of Clan Henderson and I have the usual modern tartan.
Contact Matt at the Scottish Tartans Museum or maybe go to the Clan Henderson website.
I know which one you are talking about and it is nice looking.

That description does sound like the Weathered Henderson. If that's what you're looking for it can be had from Lochcarron's Strome range. Here I am in my Weathered Henderson, box pleat, made by Matt Newsome.

HoE makes a 13 oz Henderson Muted in their single width Rare collection at about $35 a meter on scotweb. Same fabric listed on Heritage of Scotland as double width 13oz HoE at 38.3GBP per meter ($54US or DW meter or $27 per SW meter after you split it), but it still has the green background, only in a muted/less intense tone. Henderson Weathered has the background in the brown you sound like you are looking for, only made in 16oz by Lochcarron and listed at $79 per double width meter at Scotweb. Or you can buy your kilt from Scotweb in that weathered fabric already made up in 8yd for $350 or a 5yd as $250, give or take.

My Maternal line are Hendersons and I've been thinking about getting a Henderson kilt for sometime now. The thing that's put me off so far is that the blue stripes just don't show very well under artificial light in the evening. With Lochcarron's modern colours the blue is far too dark and just appears like black, while in the ancient colours it just seems to fade into the green, making it look as though the tartan just has a large green square with no detail in it. In the case of the ancient colours it would be better if the blue was 'guarded' by black (like MacDonald of the Isles or Mackenzie) where the eyes are 'cheated' into seeing the blue. Of course in daylight (especially sunlight) it's a differant story and it's a brilliant tartan! In Lochcarron's Weathered colours, where the green becomes brown, the blue is a lovelly shade of powder blue and looks great (see Tatoo Bradley in his matching lovatt blue jacket). I just don't like all that brown, even if it had a hint of green it would be better, after all Henderson is supposed to be a green tartan. I've taken a swatch of this into a hall at night and it's very dull for a 'dress' occasion in the evening. House of Edgar only produce Henderson in medium weight (although I do note that they have started producing it in their 16oz budget cloth 'Nevis') and I must admit that their 'modern' blue is slightly lighter than Lochcarron's and shows better, however their muted Henderson is, for me, the pick of the bunch. The green is a lovelly moss green, and the blue, although not quite as nice a shade as Lochcarron's weathered, is still not too light or dark and shows well against the green. Also it looks wonderful in daylight, better than the modern green in my opinion, and would go really well with oatmeal socks. Although only available in 13oz medium weight, and more expensive as it's in their Old & Rare collection, this is the one I'll have my Henderson kilt made in when I eventually do get it.
The Kilt is my delight !

Hey Freddie, Marton Mills makes that Muted/Mossy Green Henderson tartan in their 16 oz. range. I have a swatch of it Rocky sent me, and it's FANTASTIC. I will have to have a kilt in it at some point.
