What is your tartan? What is your favorite?

I am a Macalester, derived from MacAlister, a sept of MacDonald. I am proud of my ancestry, I'm even a representitive of Clan MacAlister Society. But I don't own a MacAlister tartan kilt. Why? It's an unappealing arrangement of loud, clashing colors. I'm sure, at one time, it was quite fashionable. I would bet that there are many who would say that it is still lovely. Not for me thanks. I prefer subdued, earthy tones like browns and greens, I own a Buchanan hunting, a black watch, a black Stewart, an acu cammo traditional, and a brown duck Utilikilt (for around the house and camping) I also have a no name great kilt that I wear to renaissance faires. I'm getting married this fall and my fiancee wants my kilt to be fall color themed. I am leaning toward MacAlister of Skye. This decision is 2 parts because at least it's a familial tartan and 1 part because it is relatively fall "ish" . I'm sure everyone has a favorite (or many) I am just curious what you ladies and gents lean toward and why. Do you wear your clan tartan or do you prefer "new" tartans such as national tartans or do you prefer a solid colored kilt?

    Bear tartan.
I don't have a kilt in it yet.

I'll be happy when I do, though.

I wear kilts of tartans of clans that are of significance to me, regardless of the color, a very minor consideration.

I can think of few things more superficial that wearing a kilt at one's wedding to match, allegedly, the colors of the season.

I suppose there is pride of ancestry, and then there is pride of color co-ordination.

I have a few that I have made for myself; gordon dress, black watch, MacPherson modern, MacPherson hunting and Isle of Skye. My favorite to wear to clan events is the MacPherson Hunting, BUT, I really love the Isle of Skye.

    Clan Tartans: MacNeil, Lamont
In Alba thread and needle are carefully constructing a MacNeil of Barra Ancient of kilt of Alba wool. This will be the Tank that is worn for Clan, and special occasions with all the correct trimmings. At some point in the future one will be constructed in Lamont Ancient. This will also be for the more "traditional" use.

For everyday wear, I have a WPG Gordon, USAK semi-traditional American Heritage (current favourite), SWK Standard Irish National, HoE casual wool County Donegal tartan, Green, black, tan Amerikilts, Black Utilikilt Basic, SWK thrifty Black Watch, Sport Kilt in Air Force tartan, Freedom Kilt Olive colour, and several home sewn in solid colours. I often wear one of the solid colour kilts when I am wearing shirts that have a pattern. The Amerikilts work with shirt and pattern tie, sport coat as business wear.

Obviously, I wear MacMillan. Ancient, Dress, Hunting, it doesn't matter. My trews are always cut in Hunting, modern colours. I've kilts in all three, some weathered, some modern, some "old colours". I don't need any other kilts in any other tartans. I'm happy to follow my chief. I'm a MacMillan.

My grandmother's family came from the Isle of Skye, so I favor MacLeon tartans. I love the Black Stewart because of the high color contrast. I like that kind of thing a lot. I also like my saffron- my grandfather was a Leddy from Claire County. I also have a Colorado state tartan kilt that should be here tomorrow with any luck. So mostly family and home significant, but occasionally just things that I happen to like- like modern fashion tartans. I love the Nightstalker.

Oh, and my tartans are Wolfe and MacLeod.

    ferguson

i've got just the one ferguson modern 8 yard, 16oz. suits me fine. hoping to one day in the not to distant future to get a ferguson weathered in the same weight. love the colours; great contrast to the modern. the goal is to have two to leave both my daughters one each when the day comes that i go to dust, and they'll each have a bit of cloth to remember their old man.
