    Lightbulb Atlanta Jonesing Begins

Stopped by a little kilt rental place this afternoon. (www.atlantakilts.com) I placed an order for a 16ox Black watch pleated to the stripe.

These are an Acrylic kilt. They are a rental company, but sell them as well. As this was my first purchase from them, I decided to keep it simple. I will likely try some of their other services in the future if i am satisfied.

The fabric is thick and heavy. I was quite impressed with it as an analogue for wool. (My other Kilt is a 16 oz Ancient TANK by Geoffrey Taylor.)

Nice group of ladies at the shop. (more of a warehouse but that's fine.)

$127.00 plus tax for the kilt. Stitched down fell. Leather straps. (3) A little stiffer than wool, but I think that will "loosen" up with wear.

I'll wright a full review once I get my kilt. (about 3 weeks.) Should be a good daily kilt for walks in the park and such. The owner's a Piper too so I like supporting the group.

Please let us know how it turns out. I have come across their website, but never seen one of their kilts in person, that i know of. As an Atlanta, it would be helpful to know if they can be safely recommended, or in what context to do so.

BTW are their pleats trimmed above the fell?

Oh yes, please let us know how it works out. As a Georgia resident, I have considered purchasing from them but have not heard of their quality.

I can give you my 2 cents on Atlanta kilts. I bought a pair of REALLY good ghillies there that were used, but all the other ghillies were really poor quality and looked like a shoe makers attempt at ghillies. The coats were OK, but not great as were the kilts...VERY acrylic. BUT, the staff was EXTREMELY nice and for what you pay, I think that its passable...Key word-You get what you pay for. I'm lucky in that I wear a size 14UK, so they had to get ghillies from Scotland for this size, so I lucked out @ 60$ for a used pair!.

Alright, I got the call yesterday and picked up my new Kilt This afternoon. Pictures will be coming soon. (need new batteries.)

My new Black Watch 16ox acrylic Kilt from Atlantakilt. A few Stats.

    Order Placed, 3/19/09
    Arrived in store 3/31/09
    Picked up 4/1/09

Fabric: Heavy (thick) acrylic. A little rough. You can certainly feel the weave. When I compare it to my 16 oz TANK in wool, there is no doubt which fabric is better. This is a fabric made for a kilt for hire. (rental) I purchased it new however and paid a tad more for it as a result.

Condition: The kilt was properly tacked (basted) to keep the pleats smooth. It was then folded once and boxed wrapped in paper and bubble wrap. All inside a sturdy carton. Very few wrinkles considering the travel. They hung oour for the most part.

Fit: I measures to my hip and natural waist. Length is 22.5 as requested. I like the snug (ot tight) fit that this kilt provided.

Pleats: Okay... for the serious part.

There are 19 pleats each about 1.75 inches deep. This is pleated to the stripe. 1.5 inch reveal. pleats are top stitched in the fell. (machine stitched.)

3 1.5 inch leather straps in the traditional configuration.

Review: I figured this would be a good kilt night kilt and something to just wear out and about. It is sold / marketed as a kilt for weddings. I guess that will work if you are not a kiltie to begin with. A decent kilt for hire. Reasonable price. EXCELLENT service from the staff in their little store-front.

I think this is a reasonable kilt for what I intended. Festival, pub, trekking. I doubt you would find me wearing it with my PC, but for the general, non-kilt-wearing public, it should do fine. Props for Brad for offering a reasonable product in ATL. I think he would benefit his own business by expanding to a "better" level kilt for those in the know.

    Would I buy again? Sure

Recommend? Sure, as long as you know that this is not a tank. It is not an SWK either. It is in between. Heck, for the price, you might just rent one for the weekend and decide if you like it before you investing buying.

Pictures? Yeah Yeah, I'll get to it once I get some new Batteries. (I hate digital cameras.)
