Historic Fredericksburg, VA Independence Day Tour

With having Friday off from my day job for Independence Day, I thought I would take advantage of it with a visit a few of the Colonial era sites in historic Fredericksburg. First on my list was Washington Square where the statue General Hugh Mercer is. Mercer was not only an American patriot but a Scottish one, being on the field of Culloden as surgeon to Bonnier Prince Charlie.

It was fitting to wear my new USA Kilt casual in the Caledonia tartan. This tartan dates back before the 1800s.

George Washington grew up across the river at Ferry Farm. When Washington lived at Mount Vernon he acquired this home for his mother Mary Washington. There is a monument to her at the site where she spent time find solitude near Washington Square.

There is a family grave site of the Gordons of Kenmore near the monument. I thought some of my fellow Gordies would appreciate the photos of it.

Kenmore is also on Washington Square and is an impressive Colonial home.

When I was a wee lad I visited Thomas Jefferson’s home, Monticello. I was awestruck that on his tomb he had inscribed the three things he wanted to be remembered for and being President of the United States was not on there. Here’s one. Another is the founder of University of Virginia. Now what was the third?

There is another tie to Colonial Fredericksburg that a British captain sought refuge at his brother’s who lived here who would become quite famous in our War of Independence. His brother is buried here in the graveyard of St. George Episcopal Church. The brother’s tomb stone is still here preserved by others to honor Mr. Paul’s brother who added the name of Jones as his last name.
