What is an acceptable sporran "for all occasions"? I have heard a full mask may be just that but also that some of the fur Ferguson Britt Sporrans and others like them would do the same. How do you feel that works? Would you ever have just one sporran or is a quiver full a better option?

Will you show me your favorites? It can be just one, or it can be many, it is up to you.

There is a current thread by James MacMillan- What makes the perfect sporran? that shows there are truly different strokes for different folks. Show me yours so I can get an idea of what works for who and what path I might want to take in the future.

I am a newbie here and admit it freely. I have searched and have not found a thread or gallery like this and would really like your pictures and input. If this is a duplicate, I am deeply sorry. Thank you for the help and if there exists a thread like this in the archives any mod can feel free to delete this one and send me a link.

OK, I'll start.

Here is my Thorfinn Custom Sporran.
It is an Acorn colored Buffalo Hide.
Has a small pocket inside that I put business cards in, and a loop for a pen or pencil.
Plenty roomy and absolutely beautiful.
This one was gifted to me by a dear friend.


Here are my 2 custom ones by Donnie at Wyvern Leatherworks.
They are roomy and easy to get into.
I use these most of the time if not using one of the cloth ones that match my kilt.
The Punisher one is #6 of a limited run of 25.
The Star Wars Rebel logo one is a custom, one of a kind.
I am a big Star Wars geek, and Donnie made this one custom for me.
One of these days I am going to make a kilt specifically for this sporran.

This can be done in a tartan as well.


Kind of hard to tell, but yes, that sporran is pleated.

L&M sporran, I bought this one basically for Scottish Country Dancing, as there are no tassels, however I find I've been wearing it more and more often.




My Freelander sporran is really the one I use most often for day to day wear, it is functional and roomy enough so that I can bring anything I may need with me, and it looks wonderful doing it. This sporran is quality and you can see it from a distance.


My Ferguson Britt sporrans do well from a casual look to formal, I personally like to wear my Sealskin sporran for formal wear though you could easily wear a Ferguson Britt, just as the Freelander is a quality sporran, so are the Fergusson Britt sporrans




FOr formal wear as I said I like to wear my Sealskin Sporran again from L&M Sporrans. If you really want an heirloom quality sporran you could do a lot worse than L&M Sporrans.


For Ron, this Sporran is 7" across and about 9" deep




Basically I think having different sporrans for different uses and events is important. For example I would not wear the Freelander to a white tie event, just as I would not wear the Sealskin to go out to the shops.

I prefer the leather belt, my first sporran was my Dad's old sporran, it is now about 60 years old, it came with a leather belt, these days it is exceedingly difficult to find sporran belts, I think it all comes down to expense, I'm pretty sure sporran chains are cheaper than sporran belts. I reserve the chain for formal wear.

I would wear the Skunk with the Black leather for a formal event if I did not already have the Sealskin, I would not wear the Muskrat with Brown leather as I find the Brown does not work as well for formal events.

My faint hope is that some day ALL sporran vendors will openly disclose the size of their offerings.

My favorite day-to-say sporran is the Stillwater Nightstalker. I have a ballistic nylon that I near wore out. Some frays here and there. When Jerry did the Nightstalker in leather jumped on it and now have one in black and one in brown. Use a leather sporran strap for sure, don't want the chain cutting up my kilts.



I have a brown and a black Freelander. They are wonderful sporrans. I have some difficulty controlling the cords. That's about me, not about the sporrans. I did add those little spring squeeze things to the cords, like are used on drawstring bags to hold them closed. Feels more secure to me that way. I wear my Freelanders when I want to look "more Scottish." Thats #4 in the pic as near as they can figure.



Just laid out the $300 for an L&M through Scottish Tartans Museum (Is that a sign of kilt accessory addiction or what?) Did the design-your-own thing and wound up with Beaver fur and Maple Leafs to honor my family's Canadian and Oregon roots. Haven't worn it to a function yet. Not a lot of dress functions here in the boondocks.



I really liked the Leathersporran Company drop the nail through the hole sporrans when I saw them here. So I bought one. Don't wear it often. The nail thingie is kind of a pain and I don't prefer the firm/stiff leather this sporran is. When I walk the chain and tassels and the stiff leather make the sporran into a pretty loud drum. Thinking of ways to maybe soften the leather up some.



Ren Faires are a great place to scout "different" looking sporrans. Well, anyplace is. I always have my eyes open for possibilities. This one is a Ren Faire pouch adapted as a sporran.



Here's another Ren Faire find. The Nativearth (www.nativearth.net) #6 bag. its 9"x9" and holds a LOT for hiking or games. Has a wide loop on the back that lets it be used for a sporran. Looks good on us fat guys. Has two large compartments inside and a wallet compartment to keep everything organized..



I found this Shoshone made deerskin pouch on the Paiute reservation. Just hooked it up here for a pic but it works well as a smaller sporran with tartan kilts. Loops just fit over a sporran strap. Have another similar one thats a dark brown. Can't recall where I found it.



And, you can get creative. Was reading an article in True West Magazine about Miss April's Carpetbags. She was making purses out of hair on buffalo leather. Contacted her and she made me a custom buffalo sporran with the hair still on the leather. Made it big - 9" deep, 7" wide, and 2" thick. The flap is full size, to the bottom of the sporran so its heavy enough to hold in place by itself, no need for a latch gizmo.



And, don't forget you don't "have" to wear a sporran. As Ham has taught us so well a vest or a jacket can work in lieu of a sporran.

You will see in it what sporrans Glen and I used for different levels of formality.

I have a Fergusson Britt sporran and not only is it lovely, it is appropriate for all manner of dress. If I was advising someone just starting out I would suggest they get two sporrans. A nice brown Freelander for day wear and a Fergusson Britt sporran for everything else.

I wear a KILT, almost DAILY & a Sporran is a "importentl" part of my "LOOK". ( see here for a sample of my "eclectic looks" - http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/album.php?u=4412 ) Because of that, I have over 10 sporrans. They range from Very plain ( DoD OR issue ) to more "ornate" ( Furs, Horse Hair etc.) NOTE, I DO NOT own ANY "masks" & ALL are LEATHER or Leather/fur/ horse hair.
Several, I have made myself, a couple are DoD issue ( including an "antique" & were given to me, , & the rest I had custom made for me by these 2 vendors.

A Sporran for ALL OCCASIONS ??? IMHO NO.

As I mentioned above, I wear a Kilt almost Daily & the "occasions" ranging from "period wear" ( several looks) to "Dress" ( Business to "evening formal") Taking my "period wear" out of the discussion, IMHO, a sporran that would be "acceptable" for "casual" wear ( walk about ) is ???? for "Formal Dress wear.( & vice versa )

My "humble advise" is to sit back & "plan"
1. What "occasions" am I going to KILT UP ?? ( casual to ????? )
2. What function will it be "required to "preform" ??? ( many sporrans that are "dress" ( such as my horse hair & one of my "Beaver's" hold very little )
3. What $$$$ can I "devote" ??? ( a "good" "general" Sporran will start @ $100.00+++ & a "dress" sporran can be $300.00 or MORE. )

If it were me, I would get 2 sporrans. ( if I had to "limit" myself )
1. For Daily wear, casual to dress business I would suggest a "Thorfinn with an additional "Fur Flap"
