    What to say?

I was at a pot luck tonight when I was approached by an guy who was active duty (Air Force) who asked me "is that a Kilt?" "Yes, it is, the tartan is my family tartan)" "I've never seen a kilt before, are they comfortable?" "Well yes they are, very comfortable, I'm surprised you have never seen a kilt, they are fairly popular with the militaries of the world", "Really? I guess I've never been stationed where they would be part of the uniform" At this point his wife grabbed him and took him away. I've been in company of lots of military guys, and I have never got this one before, never seen a kilt before at all?

Is this common? I mean never? Or perhaps the guy leads a really sheltered life?

Even more unusual since the Air Force and Air Force Reserve have tartan kilted pipe bands....

Did you tell him there's a young sergeant on xmarks who runs around in an ABU kilt?

At least he knew enough to call it a kilt.. He obviously knew what one was, without ever seeing one up close.
I have known a lot of people who joined the service, and never really gone anywhere. People I met who joined the Air Force, and never left the State of Texas.. or guys in the Army, who never left California, after boot.
I was raised in the Air Force and we were fortunate to travel, and when I joined the Marines, I travelled even more. I guess not everyone gets to experience the World, to travel and experience different cultures. I hope, with your encounter, you might stir something with this Airman, and he experiences the culture, most of us enjoy.

Nothing like that has happened to me, however it might be his way of asking a question of whether he should get one.

    "Is it comfortable?"
No it sucks. It's the most uncomfortable thing on Earth. I only wear it so strangers will come up and talk to me.

    lol
That's one of my favorites... "Is it comfortable?"
Does anyone every go to a lad in troosers and say "Are those blue jeans comfortable?"

That's it...I'm getting the T-shirt I mentioned before that says:

    "Yes I'm Scottish
No I don't play the bagpipes
    Yes I've tried Haggis
    Yes the kilt is comfortable
    None of your business"

That would answer the top 5 questions.
