Improved Mountain Hardware Kilt

I'm starting a new thread on this as I think it's a big shift in kilts heading into the main stream retail market and the other thread didn't get much a reaction. I think many see the words "Mountain hardware Kilt" and think of the straight Unisex skirt that's been sold for many years. This second generation from Mountain Hardware could show a lot of promise and appeal to men looking for a more comfortable garment option.

Call me crazy but I see this as a big positive for the kilted community.

Many folks in the camping and hiking community who wear kilts wear this "kilt". Several brick and morter outdoors stores sell them as well a many online stores. The biggest negative I hear from many about this garment is that it does not have pleats. Well, if these reports are true, all that is about to change in the spring of 2010.

It's a darker color, has two cargo pockets instead of one (but no smaller left-hand front pocket), metal snaps instead of the plastic clips, and is pleated in the back.

That's starting to look more kilt-like, for sure. Whenever I've seen those to date, I don't see how the current design really works without the pleats. In the photo you've shown, there looks to a garment that would go up and down hills much easier. I think there's probably a place for a kind of kilt that's lightweight, quick-dry, and you can pack in with the rest of your gear and not have to worry about pristine pleats.

what are these made of? Nylon or some such?

I have one of the original designs. It doesn't work well without the pleats. The new design should be much better.

Yes that new version certainly looks like it would have a lot of potential buyers.

I'll agree, and say that I think it's so interesting that that difference is just a few inches of surplus fabric gathered in a particular way. Somewhere in these two kilts is the tipping point, for those who allow the notion of contemporary kilts.

I agree lads. That little bit of extra cloth has a real good chance of making this product much more easily accepted as a male option to many guys. A wise design change on their part.

That was my first thought. I wouldn't wear it without pleats. I'd would get one for my wife , though! Now the second gen, on the other hand- that one I like! Minus the pockets. I'm not big on pockets on kilts. I ordered a Flamingo Kilt because the price was right and the pockets are optional.
