An idea for a formal jacket
Hi all,
As you may have noticed, I'm planning kilted outfits for my better half and myself for the Burns do at Ferintosh i January. And now I need some advise, again. I have had an idea for a formal jacket and waistcoat ensemble, and would like any comments you have. Especially from negative, traditionalist curmudgeons, as I am one myself at times.
Thing is, I have the pattern for the outfit on the left here, the national dress from the area where I grew up. Some time ago a member of this forum (don't remember who) commented that a jacket like this one would go nicely with a kilt. What do you think of these two ideas:
1) Make the jacket and waistcoat exactly as shown and wear them with a kilt.
2) Make the jacket without red trimmings, a bit shorter and with no lapels, a bit like a sheriffmuir without the flaps (but longer, reaching down to just above the sporran / just below the belt (which I won't wear with a waistcoat))
Also, what do you think of the waistcoat? Is a double-breasted waistcoat a no-no with a kilt? Is the silk brocade a bit over the top? The gold one shown in the picture isn't my style, but I like the idea. Here's a list of the most common varieties in my area (although the rule is simply "whatever you like").

Very nice jackets.
I like the jacket on the right ( the red one ), and think with a few small tweeks it would with the kilt.

Oops, I didn't see JSFMACLJR's post. Never mind.

I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

I do have a red double breasted evening waistcoat; alas it has "shrunk" and now is in the possession of my sons!

If you could incorporate the Inverness Flaps, then no one would know the difference. That is for both right and left. I think you are right, the piping should be the same colour as the jacket.

Here is a similar jacket, modelled on one worn by David Stewart of Achara:

Thank you all for your comments!
My first thought was actually to make a Sheriffmuir with this pattern as a starting point, but then I came to think about how to do the flaps, and found they're a complicating factor I really don't need if I'm to make two jackets, two waistcoats and a kilt before january 29th... Also I've never seen the back of a sheriffmuir, so I don't really know what to add. For the same reason I might drop the piping alltogether.

Sorry, JSFMACLJR, I realized I spelled your member name wrong after it was too late.

I think either style of those two jackets could work.
