Pickpocket Avoidance - Hopefully

Wasn't long ago Alex was sharing his sad kilted experience with pickpockets.

With a trip coming up next month wanted to figure out a way to keep my money and important papers safe from pickpockets while kilted.

The Utilikilts Survivor II and Mocker have front pockets so deep I have to lean over to reach the bottom. A good solution, but I don't own either any more and don't wanna buy one.

I've hunted the Internet for just about every under the clothing hideaway gadget and gimmick made. They all seem difficult to access while kilted.

Then I read something about keeping your wallet in your front pocket for pickpocket safety and something clicked. Realized I could cut down an old pair of cut off jeans so I had only the waistband and front pockets left and wear it inconspicuously under my kilts.

Anyone wanting to access my hidden stuff would first have to raise my kilt then access my front pockets. Pretty obvious stuff - if they even realized it was under the kilt. And it was free. All I had to do was take some scissors to some old cut offs.

Not a difficult do it yourself project, but hopefully effective.









I know many kiltmakers make kilts with hidden pockets. But this way I don't have to buy a lot of pocketed kilts for one trip. Just wear this rig with the kilts I already have. Pics are with my new USA Kilts Casual in MacPherson Hunting.

And, despite the easy access for me, probably wisest only to access it in private so as not to give away the secret. And, by splitting the assets in two pockets - even if a pickpocket figured out I was wearing something under the kilt and was bold and talented enough to pick one pocket - I'd still have reserves in the second pocket. And in case of a mugging - the mugger might never suspect I was wearing such a device. Can put a "dummy" wallet in the sporran with a few bucks in it.

That is a GREAT idea. Currently I do not have any plans for travel, but will definitely make this with the next pair of jeans I dispose of. I have two pair that are pretty close to the end.

Don't forget, If you have to go thru customs, this will probably start the metal detectors..... I'd put it on when I get there. Great idea by the way.

Good use for an old pair of wornout jeans, I suppose, although I don't think I would care to wear this under my kilt.

I seem to recall that Rob Roy MacGregor had a booby-trapped sporran that would shoot you if you didn't know how to properly open it. Can't recall if that was from the actual novel or somewhere else, but it would be a real surprise to a thief.

You can also buy (or easily sew) a small pouch that is intended to hang inside trousers or around the neck under your shirt. These will work exactly as the ingenious use of old jeans that Ron demonstrates does. They are loosely dropped inside the kilt (or trousers) or hung around the neck under the shirt, out of sight and not so easily accessible for would-be thief.
