    First Kilt

I have been looking through the forums and have seen some different styles of wearing the kilt and read the proper way to wear a kilt and I was wondering if some people could give me feedback and advice to mine and also my hat that I have.
Here are the links to some pictures of me wearing my kilt
    -My hat.

    -Sandals

-I'm not military. However military boots.

-Picture of the belt and belt buckle. The flash was on. The belt is black.

I'm still working on either making a sporran or buying one.

Okay I have another question. What can be used to glue or will I be better off to use needle and thread to put a lining piece of leather in my sporran? Btw I'm using a rabbit pellet and lining it for strength with deer leather. I hoping for across between a rugged day sporran and dress sporran. I will post pictures in the DIY Showroom when its done.

    Strider,
The outfit with or without the cap will do you well here in the U.S. It would help to have the sporran, so as to have a place to transport the keys, wallet, etc. There are some good sporran threads in the D.I.Y. department. I have not attempted one yet, and do not feel comfortable with any opinions there.

B.T.W., I also own a Stillwater Thrifty in the Black Watch tartan. I also wear it much the same way you do.

Honestly, I can't see very much in your first three pictures because the images are so dark.

But in the last picture, I would say that you really ought to invest in a proper kilt belt that is 2" to 2.25" wide.

Alright. I will probably end up making a kilt belt as soon as I can. Unless I can afford one soon.

I don't want to sound rude, but the last photo the belt is way too tight and makes you look like a sack of spuds, with the correct width belt you would look 100% better

That's why I joined. To get advice and learn
But like I said before right now it will probably be a bit before I can get one.

Congratulations on making the effort to "do it right"! It's had to tell from the photos because it could be a matter of the camera angle, but a gentleman generally looks his best if the hem of his kilt comes to the top of the knee.

Those of us who are "traditionalists", and wear our kilt in the manner most often associated with Scotland, usually-- if not always-- wear hose or socks that, when folded over, come up to 2-3 inches below the knee. These can be "scrunched down" when a more casual look seems appropriate.

As SteveB has pointed out, you will need a sporran. What you might want to consider-- finances permitting-- is purchasing a really inexpensive sporran on ebay, and using that as the backing for your rabbit fur conversion. Richard is right about the belt being too tight and giving you a "pinched" look. There is nothing wrong with the width of your belt, although a belt the same width as the buckle is more usual, and as Tobus pointed out, these tend to be about 2.5" wide.

Anyhow, good first effort, and keep at it!

    Hi strider,

If you are serious about doing DIY, then this might be useful:

    http://www.tandyleatherfactory.com

I don't know where in Central USA you are but they have a mail order service as well as on line. I have made one kilt belt and a sporran strap and have another two of each in the process. I would recommend them highly.

    Regards

    Chas
