Time for a New York State tartan?

Ordinarily I'd have started a thread like this in The Tartan Place, but I wanted to catch the attention of as many New York Members as possible and I think General Kilt Talk gets the most traffic. If the moderators move it then so be it

In a thread on state tartans Woodsheal bemoaned the fact that NY State has no tartan of its own. I agree that as one of the larger states and having many Highland games and other Scottish activities it's high time we had one and I volunteered to get the ball rolling with a design idea. I've been designing on the Scotweb Tartan Designer for awhile and figured I could come up with a rough idea.

One thing the other Brian suggested was to base it on New York State geography, which i think is good because if we start going down the political or historical road we'll have way too many elements we'd have to work in, and, of course, fights will ensue about what is, or is not, important or essential.

So, as a start, I've used Old Green, Pine Needle and Pastoral Green to represent the mountains, forests and rolling hills of our state. 39 Brown to represent the farmland so many are unaware of. Morning Grey for the cities and 17 Blue for our many lakes and rivers.

What do you think? Yes? No? Are there other design suggestions?

    Regards,

    Brian

Nice! I'd wear it with pride, and think it represents NY well. I wonder how it would pleat up?

Wow...I just noticed where the multi- lines cross it looks just like an Adirondack pack basket weave. Was that intentional? Sure is fitting.

Thanks for the compliment. The basket weave effect is just something I like to do, but it's nice that it seems to echo something in NY State history.

I like it! Good design and I totally agree with the meanings behind to color choices. Especially our "undiscovered" farmland.
I have always tempered my killing with respect for the game pursued. I see the animal not only as a target but as a living creature with more freedom than I will ever have. I take that life if I can, with regret as well as joy, and with the sure knowledge that nature's ways of fang and claw or exposure and starvation are a far crueler fate than I bestow. - Fred Bear

I live in a very rural agricultural area and I think most people would be surprised to learn how much farming actually happens in NY.

I think Brian's done a great job! I really like the overall muted tones, and the meaning behind the colors. Further complicating it, such as in adding additional lines of red or yellow for example, would detract from the effect.

Pleated to sett would look super...!

It looks like a fantastic tartan to me!

Do remember that anything that you save using the Scotweb tartan designer automatically belongs to Scotweb, though. That means that, if you should be able to push this tartan all the way to the top and get it adopted by the state, Scotweb will be the only one who can weave it legally. Just wanted to make mention of that.

Again, that's a fantastic looking tartan. Keep up the good work!

I like the looks of it, but if I may make three points:

    1. The colors are an almost perfect match to the Buffalo tartan. You might consider different shadings so the two tartans are more dissimilar.
    2. I personally would go with a slate gray instead of the morning grey - to me it better evokes the architecture of New York's cities - solidity with style.

Just wanted to reiterate this. You may want to make further revisions using a different tartan designer - Matt Newsome recommended this one in his blog, and there have been a couple of others mentioned around the forum.

The Buffalo tartan looks quite different to my eyes.

Is the the slate gray darker? I'd like to see how that looks....
