So I was at the mall...
Last weekend I was at the mall wearing my VP Gordon with my wife. While there I got more attention than I have ever gotten while wearing a kilt!
There was a band of giggling girls who as to take my picture. Since I was in no mood to end up on Twitter or Facebook I politly answer no. While we were walking away my wife looked back and saw they were going to any ways and moved in behind me to block it.
Had a guy come up to me and ask if there was a special event? I said no and he complemented on wearing it "just because." He said he was a piper (hope he is not hanging around here ) so I was wondering why you need a special occasion to wear a kilt?
Also had an older gentleman complement me on not wearing thoughs "camando" kilts. Sees too many around. Wasn't sure how to answer that one as I am looking forward to a couple casual kilts coming in.

Unfortunately, when I wear my kilt out and about, with no special event going on, people always ask me what the occasion is. Or, do I play the bagpipes? After awhile, it does become a pain!

The expense obviously. Most wouldn't wear an expensive garment for anything but dress up occasions. This is changing and the more the cost get within reach, the more it will change.

You need a host of witty and confusing responses. When people asked me why I grew my handlebar mustache I started telling them I was steam punk.
"Special occasion? I'm being knighted later today".
"Pipes? I'm not a plumber".

Please do, just credit me where you can. ![Very Happy](http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif)
Also;
"I traded them for a banjo"
I'm surprised how many people ask me if my two year old son has a diaper on under his kilt.

I don't see why questions would bother people. I personally am more bothered when people point and laugh, instead. I much prefer the questions! It shows an interest and a willingness to learn, which in my estimation, is a good thing, because I am always happy to teach. Education aides acceptance, and ignorance is the gateway to prejudice.

Oh there was quite a bit of that too. Actually the not so subtle whispering gets me more. Though there were people who didn't even bother hiding the opinions on how stupid or ridiculous they thought I looked.

If I thought it had been serious or at least fun I might have considered it but it was very obviously mocking.

What he said. I'll second that. Although the bagpipe question does wear on me. I don't ask guys in bib overalls if they play the banjo. Now that I think of it, I might start. Nah...I have too many hobbies already.

Amy brings up an interesting point. What about kilts make people want to ask, sometimes questions that are verging on sexual harassment if I asked a woman the same question, are ok. If you see someone in a sari, a turban or a burka no one thinks that just have to come up and start asking questions. I don't mind the respectful or the genuinely curious. After all you guys are patient with me asking questions but for some odd reason the feeling I get is most don't fall into that category.
