    Proper fit of Balmoral

Hello all I have what I hope is a simple question:
I just got my 1st Balmoral today Ordered my regular hat size - wondering about the proper fit - is the Balmoral worn the same as say the Military Beret ie. only at very top of head, Im aware of the tilt to right so that clan badge is highlighted

Any help would be appreciated - Thanksith:

    Hi,
Have a look at this thread, "Jock's New Balmoral":

I wear the same size in Balmoral as I do any other regular hat with a specific measurement (such as my fedoras), a 7 3/4 or size 62. I wear mine down a bit over the forehead in the front and at least down to if not over the point in the back of my head (not that I have a pointy head or anything). I believe that typical military berets are worn a bit higher than that normally, but you might get someone with a military background to chime in about it.

I guess it all depends on your preference and how your head is shaped. I've seen pics with the Balmoral worn low, like to the eyebrow, and some wear it at the very top of the noggin. I prefer mine at the mid part of the forehead and tilted to the side.

I have two excellent Blamorals from Dunadd Trading Co. and they're the Cadillac of hats. I did "Jock" mine, though....now it looks great. Putting a new hat in cold water can me intimidating, but it gives a better look, IMHO.

Having worn an army beret for nine months before being issued my regimental tammie, I can say that styles vary, even when NCOs interpret regulations pretty strictly.
Ideally the beret or the bonnet should sit at mid-forehead and down a bit at the back, with some overhang on the right-hand side.
But I have seen some minute army berets with barely an inch or two of overhang, and a tight fit on top.
The tight fit (high on the head) makes no sense to me, because the smaller the hat, the easier it is for it to come off accidentally.
But getting the bonnet to fit tightly at the proper height is best, and Jock has shown a pretty good way of doing it.
    Regards,
    Mike

I don't think that there is a right or wrong way to wear a balmoral and as all our heads are different shapes, added to that we all have our own idea what looks right and most importantly, what is comfortable, then we are in for an endless discussion---- even if we stick to the basics. The one thing that needs remembering though, is that we are talking about wearing the balmoral as civilian wear, in the main, which is not necessarily the same as wearing a military beret.

To me, the bonnet feels best when the band is level around my head. If it tips back or forward or to one side or the other, the hat just doesn't feel quite right. I also like it to be a couple of fingers above my eyebrows in the front, with the rest of it lying level. Ultimately, it's your head and your hat, but please don't set it up so high that it puffs up like a mushroom.
