    Underkilt for marathon walk

Next April myself and a few friends in the Tartan Army will be doing the annual charity walk from Hampden Park, Glasgow to Balloch on the shores of Loch Lomond, a distance of 26 miles.
Probably will be fairly cold in April and this walk will take several hours so we will have to dress for the weather
Some time ago, there was a discussion on X-Marks about an underkilt for extra warmth for such conditions.
Has anyone come up with a suitable underkilt or know of any business dealing with such a garment?

I have a set of polyester kilt liners in various colours from Anna Manning Porter of GBK Enterprises. She used to advertise on eBay, but last I heard she was quite ill following a heart attack and pneumonia.
I would suggest as an alternative, which I have also experimented with, would be cutting off an old cotton T-shirt below the armpits then sewing the lower part of the T-shirt onto a Jockey waistband.

Something like UnderArmor shorts wouldn't be sufficient? Personally, I'd be more concerned about the chafing, but that depends on body type.

I agree, chafing would be more of a concern. I wore my kilts all year and in all kinds of weather when I was stationed in Alaska and didn't need anything for extra warmth. Also, if one is going to walk 26 miles, one's body should produce plenty heat of its own.

Chafing would be more of concern for me as well. Depending on your kilt (weight and fabric) and your speed of course I would guess you'll probably stay fairly warm.

I have no experience with a liner but with "chafing defense" I would recommend 2toms Sportshield

Don't let the roll on fool ya it doesn't run stays put and last a long long time.
I have always tempered my killing with respect for the game pursued. I see the animal not only as a target but as a living creature with more freedom than I will ever have. I take that life if I can, with regret as well as joy, and with the sure knowledge that nature's ways of fang and claw or exposure and starvation are a far crueler fate than I bestow. - Fred Bear

    Underarmor.

Unless that underkilt is pleated and hangs exactly like your kilt, you may as well just wear a skirt, because it's not going to allow the same freedom of movement.

I don't know what you think of as "cold", but 35*F is fine, assuming you have a 16oz wool kilt and heavy socks. Just make sure what's on top is appropriate to the conditions. That 2Toms stuff would be my #1 choice over anything under my kilt, with Underarmor a close second and then only as a chafe protector, since honestly as soon as you put something on under your kilt, you lose the #1 benefit of wearing a kilt in the first place.

Agree, caution with jdez folks. Think the site is still up though. I bought three of their underkilts in black a bunch of years ago. Took forever to deliver, but they got here. Wear them often to protect my kilts from me and me from my kilts. They're not tight, plenty of freedom to hike/walk. They wear well like at t-shirt does. Their thread does unravel along the seams but no big deal - I just burn it off.

Shortly after I bought mine there was the incident mentioned where folks sent money and got nothing back. Not sure if that ever resolved for the folks that were taken.

If I wanted more, guessing I'd look for fat lady's cotton slips and be happy. Much prefer the underkilt to underwear - FREEDOM!

As a veteran of 25 marathons, I have some experience with them. No matter what the weather, you will sweat, so you will not want to wear an expensive tank. You will probably sweat through a kilt liner as well so wear a kilt that can readily be cleaned and wont' hold odors. As others have commented, chafing will be your major issue. Wear something like BodyGlide that is made to prevent chafing. The dry silicone products work the best because they don't get goopy and sticky.

Good luck, stay hydrated, and have fun!
