J. Higgins
I am in the market again for a new kilt. The last one I bought was in 1996 from J. Higgins. Their customer service was great back then. Has anyone had any dealings with them more recently?
I really hate to ask this for fear of stepping on the advertiser's toes, but this is a place to ask kilt questions, is it not?

They are still easy to work with
I ordered a kilt from them back in late Winter. The gentleman (sorry I can't remember his name) on the phone was very friendly and made helpful suggestions on what stockings and tie would go well with Kerr tartan kilt.
I hope that answers your question.

I still have my Higgins kilt bought back in 95. It shrunk 3 times in the closet and I had enough pleat to let it out 7" over the years. If they still make them like the use to it would be hard to beat.

You know, I found that the higher I stacked my empty beer bottles near the closet where I stored my kilt, the smaller my kilt got! I'm wondering if there was some defect in the wool.....

I ordered a modern Murray of Atholl last winter and it's great. So is everything else I ordered from them.
One small detail. I have worn a 38 suit coat for 40 years. It took a 40 waistcoat (which to my inexperience measures 38") to fit me perfectly.
My wife had them make a kilted skirt and was well pleased with it.

The finest of Scottish tailoring, I'm sure. Unfortunately, most makers of kilt jackets don't take the pear or barrel shape into account, even in the larger sizes. Which isn't to say you are that shape, but I am the latter, and I had a terrible time finding an argyle that fit.
I have a Higgins kilt from the mid-90s, so my information isn't very timely, but I've been very happy with it. It was my band kilt, and until I save the pennies for a new clan kilt, is the one I wear.

In the past to years John has made me 3 new kilts. Only had one small problem e-mail John and it was taken care of ASAP.
Andrew I think you must of spoken with Rob.

Over the past year I've ordered quite a few items from Higgins, and I was pleased every time.
My latest purchase was a PV kilt in Stewart Navy...their value kilt. Wow, for the price it's awesome! If you order one of John's wool kilts, I think you'll be happy!
Good luck with your decision.

Thank you, all. I am glad they are still a good business. Their prices are hard to beat for the quality you get.

I did my original "dive right in" approach to kilts 3 years ago this month and ordered my family tartan kilt (first), a black barathea Argyll and a charcoal herringbone Argyll and waistcoat, along with all the various starter (mostly clan crest) acoutrements. Great turnaround time considering all the fabric stuff was MTM and not in standard sizes either. Good prices, about even with most other vendors, and no risk of duty added as long as you are in the US or Canada. Only glitch was the herringbone jacket and waistcoat were made up with shiny metal buttons that required a change over to horn buttons, only a few days delay. Easy to work with, good communication. Not sure of the name of the guy I worked with---he was the only one I spoke with despite having several telephone conversations for clarification of details and updates.
I would recommend without much hesitation.
