Tearing Tweed

I'm about to start work on a tweed kilt skirt for my wife. I suspect I can simply year the fabric just like worsted wool tartan wool even though it's herringbone, but I thought I'd just check in with anyone who has used the fabric before first. Tear it or cut it?

I ripped my first piece of tartan today, but I haven't messed with my tweed. However, tweed is woven from a heavier (and maybe stronger) yarn than worsted tartan, so if it were me, I'd cut it.

Actually tweed can be made from almost any sort of weight of yarn. The term tweed isn't actually a rigid classification! Some of the looser weaves I might be a little hesitant, but to date I've ripped Harris tweeds, Heavy Italian ones, Marton mills ones, and not had a problem, but I do test a little first , jsut to be sure.

I'm usually one to err on the side of caution. Ripping is faster, but if I have any doubt at all I cut.

Looks like a nice fabric based on the avatar. Where did you get it?

If you are thinking of the Marton Mills range , I've ripped it with out any problems, just make sure you cut a few inches first inorder to get a good grip!

You should have no problem tearing it. It's faster than cutting, and a better guarantee that you'll get a straight line. I usually work with Harris Tweed and always tear it. I've also worked with other suiting weight tweeds from various commercial suppliers and never had any problems tearing the cloth.

I always tear my tweeds and have used MM tweed on several occasions. It actually rips much easier than their wool.
