We Don't Like our Drivers Wearing Kilts
We Don't Like Our Drivers Wearing Kilts
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I travelled to the Scottish central belt for an assessment for working for a bus and coach company. I chose to wear trousers as I was unsure of the nature and the extent of the activities which the assessment might include.
One of the assessment sessions involved driving a coach under the watchful eye of one of the company's driving instructors.
As soon as the instructor arrived to meet me he said "We don't like our drivers to wear kilts in the driving seat." I told him that I often wear a kilt and that if I was assigned to drive tour buses or private hires I would expect to be allowed to wear one of my kilts, but that if I was driving a service bus then I would wear the company uniform trousers.
On the way home, I begun to ponder. Since I didn't know this instructor and he did not give any indication that he had met me previously, and since I was wearing trousers when I met him, how could he have anticipated that I might be considering choosing to wear a kilt for driving?
I wonder, does he raise the subject of kilts with every potential new recruit, since some Scottish tour companies encourage their drivers to wear kilts and a few even insist on the kilt as part of the uniform?
Or perhaps he recognised me from having seen me kilted at bus rallies or from photos on the internet. Fame or infamy?

I have to admit, that is a strange comment seemingly out of the blue. Especially given that you were not wearing a kilt at the time.

This elicited a huge grin and long chuckle on a day when I very much needed it. Thanks Z.

I don't know how such things work in Scotland, but did you submit an application to them that listed references? It's possible that he called to check your references (or a current/former employer) and was told that you wear a kilt. So he may have figured that he would "head you off at the pass" with his smarmy no-kilts comment.

Well it could be very well be a bit of internet fame. I have run a GIS for a few different things and have had more than a few members pop up.
Not to say you're not famous in the traditional sense. ;)
I have always tempered my killing with respect for the game pursued. I see the animal not only as a target but as a living creature with more freedom than I will ever have. I take that life if I can, with regret as well as joy, and with the sure knowledge that nature's ways of fang and claw or exposure and starvation are a far crueler fate than I bestow. - Fred Bear

If you google your name and hometown, do you appear?
Many would-be employers run searches on their would be employees these days.
