    Next group of blades

    Afternoon all,

Got the latest group of blades in the pipeline. Three commissions and two unclaimed and will be up for trades once done if any one will be interested. I am in contact with Steve to see about joining as an Artisan but will still prefer to do trades.

One hunter (going for a carved sporran), three sgians (one damascus for hose trade, one with ivory for a commission of a friend over on the Lamont forum and one of the new style that I did for Artificer) and one that I am hoping will be a a modern interpretation of a Scottish blade. I can't remember what is called, it is between a sgian dubh and a dirk.

    Hopefully more to come,
    Jim

Woo-doggy! That's a lot of sharp goodness starting to shape up.

I'm OFFICIALLY wearing mine (which is totally GORGEOUS) for the first time tomorrow (I didn't want to risk losing it in all the blasted snow we've had).

I can't wait to see what develops out of these.

I really like the new sgian design but I'm most intrigued by the double edged blade.

I use the blades you made for me all the time. Highly recommend these for trades!

I need to start making my pattern for the Inverness cape so I can have something else to trade with.

Thanks guys. Long ways to go and may ways to go wrong.

I fianlly was able to find the term I was looking for - sgian achlais.

That's the main one that's got me worried. It is a patterned steel (damasteel, a little complicated to explain) -

Mine will look like the one on the left. Right is hollow ground.

Haven't done to many daggers so it is always a slow walk to get the grinds even. VERY easy to over grind and impossible to fix.

Here is the next, got two of the blades sanded and started on the filework of one of the sgians -

    Much happier with this filework.

Spectacular! Is the tang on the Sgian tapered or is it an optical effect?

Yep, it's tapered. I taper pretty much most of my blades as the flat grind creates a distal taper. The tapered tang balances the knife visually as well as physically with the weight. On the dagger I might gouge out the handle to lighten it further for a more balanced blade.

No work today as the garage is in the teens. The next couple days will be like this with it getting better this weekend. Unfortunately it Navy weekend so I will hope to hit them hard next week.

Some warm wool hose would be nice, wouldn't they?
