    When you're walking wounded

Had an odd situation in the fall - a broken collarbone requiring that I wear a spectacularly ugly sling. Had a very big formal dinner coming and so used a silk officer's sash as a sling which I wore with my regulation doublet and kilt.
The dark red colour worked and kept my arm in place. I don't have an electronic photo to show but medical stuff is usually very obtrusive - this instead was an elegant solution that completely worked out. Arm's fine now, too.

I am always astounded by the inventiveness of kilt wearers - well done!

I'm glad your arm is good. You didn't happen to be on your bike when it happened, did you?

Yes - Was on a touring bike following the progress of two of my kids doing the Toronto Half Marathon and saw a curb at the last minute - pretty classic. You're clipped in, semi-airborne, stick your arm out, the shock goes up it and that's that. You always think these things won't happen to you. Rode another few hundred km in subsequent weeks before I learned the pain wasn't a soft tissue injury, but a real break. The worst is what a nuisance it all is. I missed the St Andrew's Ball in 2008 because I'd broken my left arm - and you do need two for highland dancing. At least the red sash matched my garter flashes and fit the occasion. With Highland Formal its all about sweating the details. Adversity can inspire some good ideas sometimes. Just because one is banged up doesn't mean you have to look dorky.

Officer's sashes were originally designed to be used as slings and emergency stretchers on the battlefield.
