Sporran position

I did some searching and did not see anything stating proper sporran position.

I got my new L&M hunting sporran (my first sporran!) tonight and tried it on.

Does my sporran look correctly positioned? (Ignore my shoes and socks! And yes, my kilt is riding a bit low.)

ETA: I am all ears for hose and flash color suggestions!

Looks about right to me. A good guideline is that you should be able to put your hands into the bottom of the sporran and that it also provides "propriety insurance."

The rule of thumb I always heard was a hands breadth below the navel or
no more than 2" below the belt buckle.

Looks good to me. In my opinion Americans in general tend to wear the sporran too low.

The traditional view on colour combination is "don't worry about it." For those without years of experience and embedded cultural knowledge, that might better be rephrased as "wear colours that tone well with the kilt but theres no need to try and match."

The other take (common outside the Highlands, especially in North America?) is "match the colours in your kilt." So for you that would be black hose, red flashes or vice versa.

FYI if the hose you ordered have a high wool content, then you can dye them. That's what I did with my newbie cream hose.

Sporran looks good to me Ripcode. You may want to consider getting a leather sporran strap at some time as an alternative to the chain.

I am one of those who do try and tone my hose and traditional garter ties (not a fan of flashes) towards some colors in the kilt or outfit. Though for daily wear, rarely the most pronounced colors. With your tartan, and this is just me, I would likely only go with black or red hose if dressing up a bit in the evening.

For alternative hose colors, you may want to consider some of the less dominant colors in the kilt. I can't tell from the photo, but that tartan typically has a bit of blue, green and yellow in it if I'm not mistaken (though I often am).

I've found 'Loden Green' a very versatile color as well as 'Ancient Blue'. For me, Yellow hose are a bit harder to pull off, and would likely only wear the pair I have to more formal Scottish themed events.

Here is a link to some nice House of Cheviot hose on Ebay for about $36 at your door. If you check their "other items by this seller" you'll find they have a few other shades of green as well as some blues.

The garter ties are small enough that they don't make a big visual impact and so, I have found, look good toned with any thing in my outfit, tie, shirt, kilt etc. Have fun with it!

Brooke, I'd love to move to ties rather than flashes, and I have a good bit of tartan to match my kilt so I could make them up. Advice? Width? Edge finishing? Fringes? . . . and how to tie them so that they look good, and do their job without cutting off circulation.
