    Sporran makes noise while walking?

Today I wore a kilt out in public for the first time ever! In fact I wore it to work (office) and thanks to all of the advice that I got from the members of X Marks the Scot, I looked great and got many eyes, compliments, questions and smiles.

The only thing that I am wondering now is why my sporran makes a noise when I am walking. It is like a "clock...clock...clock...clock" each time I take a step...

Is it because it is not adjusted tight enough and is hitting my legs or whatever everytime I take a step, or maybe the tassels (black rabbit fur) are hitting the sporran and making the noise. Is it because I bought a $45 sporran over the internet from Stillwater? Or maybe its due to the fact that the sporran is empty? Maybe its just normal that sporrans make noise while walking?

    Thanks for any advice!!

Yes it's your tassels having their own little song and dance as you walk, doesn't matter if you have a $50 one or a $300 one, the tassels will drum as you walk. It does sound a little duller if your sporran is full. That's why some folk go with a hunting sporran or a military day sporran without tassels

    sporran

In addition to what Downunder has said, the tassel noise could be compounded by the empty sporran bouncing off your thighs as well. In it's empty state, you are essentially walking with a drum attached to the front of you!

Ahhhh the little things in life ...

I'm glad you had a good first outing with your kilt. It's not something you wear to blend in! Have fun with it.

To answer your question, some sporrans make a little noise, some make a lot, and some are quiet. The ones with a hard face almost always "drum" in my experience. I don't like it, but many guys do.

If it's driving you crazy the simplest thing to do is put a dab of glue(I used hot glue--it holds fairly well and didn't damage the leather) on the backside of the tassel to immobilize it. It doesn't take much to hold it down, and you definately don't want it to show. You can also hold it down with a hidden stitch, but sometimes that's pretty hard to do, especially on really hard or thick leather.

Your only other options are remove the tassels or get another sporran. Removing them is a matter of personal taste since they serve no real purpose beyond decoration. Of course, having another sporran would be nice too. I have a Buzz Kidder that I got from SWK that I wear a lot. It has a ton of space, looks good, has no tassels and it was only $55.

If you like the drumming don't sweat it. Just consider it your own personal drumline.

Velcro works well to hold down the tassles.

*** on the BK sporran, though I got mine from USA Kilts.

Fur works better for eveningwear, anyway. A nice leather daywear sporran is becoming

I was never a fan of the drumming accompaniment of my sporran tassels, but it drive SWMBO mad so I bought THIS sporran from What Price Glory.

I'm no expert but it seems to be a fine quality sporran and even comes with a belt. I just wish they made one in black as well.

One other little thing you might try is cinching the sporran tighter and higher, bringing it closer to your belt. I found that wearing it higher was more comfortable in the long run and tended to dampen the thump-thump-thump of a bouncing sporran (which can be quite uncomfortable, if you follow my drift).

I still have only two that do that these days: my oldest, a very soft Rob Roy style with antler pieces on the drawstrings, and another very well-made Roy Roy style with similar drawstrings. You can't glue 'em down because they have to be able to be pulled tight to close the sporran. I only wear them for more rustic occassions.

My usual sporran these days is a nice pig skin hunting sporran:

    a very plain military style

a failry plain brown with tassels

and another of a similar style, also in pig skin

NOne of them noticibly drum as I walk, especially worn high, close to my belt.
