    Help identify this crest

Many (very many) years ago, I visited Edinburgh during my Christmas holiday from University. (All right, it was in 1979). While getting in touch with my heritage, I stumbled upon this clan badge in a little kilt shop near the castle. The gentleman informed me that it was for the clan MacQueen, but not the MacQueen of Coryborough. Of course, I had not seen another one, during the week that I was there, so took him at his work. However, I have yet to see this design in any illustrated references, and it does not match the badge that my cousin, the piper, has. She admits that hers is the version most commonly encountered, and that mine may be of a different branch of the family. Since G-G-granddad Peter McQueen was born in Gargunnock, Stirlingshire, it is a possibility that my version was of a more local branch.

Anyway, if one of the more knowledgeable rabble has seen this one, or can point me to an online reference to further research it, I would be much appreciative.

The motto reads 'Virtus In Arduis', which may be why I haven't found this design referenced, yet.

A clan or family should really have only one chief of the name, and it is only the chief's arms that should be borne in the strap and buckle clansman's badge.

Because of the geographically-divided nature of the MacQueens, though, there is a possibility that the MacQueens on Skye and the MacQueens in "greater Scotland" may have had separate chiefs at one time. If this is the case, though, I'm unfamiliar with the crest used by the island MacQueens.

Very interesting question; hopefully somebody with more information than me can answer it.

I'm no expert, but from a quick web search it appears that this is a badge from the 7th and 21st Light Horse Regiment.

    See here.

Under the 4th section of this page is the following: The badge was a horse rampant in a circle on which was the unit's title; above the circle was a crown and below it a scroll with the motto "Virtus in Arduis".

Except that this badge appears to be a wolf's head erased rather than a horse rampant.

I always liked this definition of expert...(not a reference to you)

Well deserved...At least from the other posters, there is good news that this is a McQueen pin.

I apologize, azwildcat96, I didn't intend for that response to be as "snippy" as it was, I should have been more tactful in my correction.

Though I definitely consider myself an amateur when it comes to heraldry, maybe someday I'll finally know everything about nothing!

Gee, I had heard this about Ph,.D's (I are one)

I thought an expert was either a drip under pressure, or any damn fool more than 20 miles (32 km) from home who carries a brief-case!
