need great kilt help
i'm not new to kilts but i am to great kilts.
my last name is uncommon, Lynn, there is a tartan, the fabric can be made, but its an expensive custom weave. which i'm will to pay.
over at scotweb i can buy tartan fabric at a min of 4 yards at 28" wide....
my question is...can i buy two orders of 5 yards and have them put together, somehow, to make a great kilt?
any tips, suggestions or even another textile mill that could weave it for me would be great.

Should be able to join then in the middle to make double width if that was the question... assuming that you're not that micky jordon bloke the belt you'll wear will likely cover the join...
Might want to contact the mill directly to see if they have any remnants too

Unless you're pretty substantial in your girth, five yards should suffice. Much more and the thing gets too bulky.
I would think that someone would be able to make a double width run if you're paying for it. But then, I can't imagine that you couldn't sew two pieces together. Assuming that you aren't too tall, a little less than 56" should work fine. Just know that the seam will be above your waist and might show a bit right in front. I'm about 6' - 3", and I only wear a 24 1/2" kilt length, so a seam at about 28" is bound to show a little. But creative rolling of the material over the top of the belt will minimize if not outright hide the seam.

This is actually more historically correct/"traditional", as they didn't have double-width tartan back in the day.
As has been mentioned, 5 yards will be more than enough length unless you're really substantial. I have one 5-yard feileadh mor and really wouldn't want more than that. I like 4 & 1/2 just fine, and could do perfectly well with 4 yards. (I'm 5'10" and 175 pounds.)

Great answers. I think will end up ording the fabric and sewing together.
Dale- I think I will go with 4.5 yards as well since I'm the same size/weight.
I'll post pictures when I get it in.
Anybody know an American mill that get this woven?

You might still want to go for two 5-yard lengths in the actual fabric order, just to ensure that when they're sewn together the sett (pattern) will align and match on both lengths for 4 & 1/2 yards.
