tartan day problems...
Well looks at the moment like Tartan Day will be sans tartan for me...
Despite having a diversity statement etc, I am informed by my supervisor that it doesnt comply with the dress code... nor i might add do the people wearing jeans and tshirts... but that apparently doesnt matter... I did ask him to explain which part of the dress code it doesnt comply with... still waiting...
Pretty bummed about it, but I guess national pride might be enough to spur me into dealing with all the other discrimination issues i've had to put up with over the last couple of years... god help you if you're a foreigner in an american water company...
Just venting...

Pin on a swatch of tartan.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…
Yes, I have squirrels in my brain…

Wouldn't it be great if you had tartan trews and a tartan vest with a tartan shirt underneath and to top it all off a huge tartan stovepipe top hat. He/she would be so overwhelmed with tartan they would choke on it. that would be great.

Go out to dinner in your kilt. It's not worth potentially loosing your job over...is it?
I can't wear anything of the sort. I'm in the Navy and so there is ZERO chance I could pull off anything tartan related, much less a kilt. But I do plan to do something that evening. The Navy can't regulate my off-duty attire

I am with you on this, and would take it one step more. Winning the battle and losing the war. If you think that an appeal to HR would royally tick off your supervisor wearing a kilt might exact a pay back. I have a benevolent employer but he has his acceptable limits; Christmas lunch, St Patrick's Day, National Tartan Day. I wore it one other special occassion and it was not warmly received so I took notice. I like my paycheck so I accept these limits.

Depends on how leod...er...loud a statement you want to make.
Seriously, though, do you have a human resources department? Run it by them. If they don't exist go to your supervisor's supervisor. Appealing up the chain of command is an old tradition and you should be able to do it in a manner that is respectful both of your rights and your supervisor's position. Be prepared to be turned down and be gracious about it. Your job is more important than whether or not you can wear the kilt. If you fail, start laying the ground work for Tartan Day next year. Sometimes education is slow work.
Good luck,
Brian

That was my thought exactly. Another thought is a tartan tie. Nothing wrong with that, and how can they tell you that that is a violation of dress code?

I plan to wear the Edinburgh tartan neck-tie at work that day.
Cannot even consider wearing a kilt in the clinic.

Similar situation. In other employment I've worn the kilt on Tartan Day; but the current employer is a Jewish synagogue. As their Director of Security I have enough goodwill accumulated that I probably could do it but, well, the place is its own particular culture. I'll just wear my clan tartan tie (Douglas).
