Fedora with the kilt?
What are the thoughts from the community on wearing a fedora with a kilt?

Like anything else, there is a wide variety in the fedora. Is it tweed or pelt or felt? How broad is the brim and what shape? Where are you wearing it? With what other accessories? What colour?
Despite the fact that I like and own several very different fedoras (fedorae?) it wouldn't ordinarily be my first choice of a combination, but depending on what goes with it, it might become appropriate if not the usual.

I have a fedora of sorts--thanks to my 5 year olds fascination with Indiana Jones and his insistance that we have matching. I do not think I would pair it with my kilt. However, if I did it would probably only be while hiking some trails or something similar. I generally don't concern myself with fashion while hiking, so the full brim would serve a very functional requirement to keep sun off my head, neck and face. Whereas the kilt would just be for comfort while hiking. In that case, it may not look good to others but I'm not out there trying to be a fashion model, just trying to get some exercise, fresh air and enjoy the beauty of nature.

Of course you can wear your fedora. Some people won't like it, but those folks are not always representative of everyone. Go with what works for your personal style.

Would everyone please notice that I am not posting this as Steve. That hat is off.
I waited quite a while to post to this thread simply because I wanted to watch and see how it was going to go first. I figured that as soon as I posted, the mood of the thread would change just because.
So I waited and watched.
Someone came to this forum and asked an honest question.
I was quite surprised to see so many replies to that question stated in such a negative voice. So many comments that just made blanket statements offering no real help to the original posters question.
When did this forum become a war between "Right' and "Wrong"?
When did this forum become a place where one way of wearing the kilt is thought to be more proper or right than another?
It was my belief that this forum was about the kilt. I thought that this forum was about helping one another. I thought this forum was about offering a balanced and thoughtful answer to an honest question.
I have always held the belief that if someone comes to this forum and asks an honest question, that they deserve an honest answer. They come here for help. They deserve the best help that I have to offer.
Instead what I seem to see, more and more, are short "That's not how we do it." or "You shouldn't do it that way" type of posts on the one hand, and "I can do whatever I want" and "you can't tell me what to wear" posts on the other hand. No explanations given, no reasons or even examples offered. No effective help accomplished.
When did we become so polarized? When did this forum become an "us-or-them" sort of place.
And to tell the truth I'm embarassed. I'm embarassed that this has developed here.
I am going to become much more vocal on this forum. I am going to offer my help and assistance whenever and wherever I can. The thing that will be foremost in my mind is stepping outside myself to help others. Helping them to understand. Helping them to enjoy a love for the kilt.
If I make a comment like "I think this would look good" or "I don't think this would look good", I am going to give the reasons behind why I believe the way I do. I won't offer comments that sound like they are coming from god or from sort of rebellion without at least explaining the reason behind my comment.
If I offer a comment about my personal belief I am certianly going to state clearly that it is just my personal belief and that no one else is bound to believe as I do just because I say so.
I am also going to lead by example. We all learn best by example.
This forum is all about photos. We have a saying, "No pics, it didn't happen." Well, guess what. I have a personal style. It is not the right style, it's not a wrong style. But it is my style.
How can I possibly offer my belief in my style without pictures of myself? How can someone state "this is how we do it" and not back that up with pics of themselves doing it that way? And it is even worse if they post a pic of someone else then state "That is the way we do it." Sorry, that reasoning just doesn't hold water.
I won't come here to lay down the law. I also won't come here to tear down the establishment. If someone posts in that tone what it really says to others is "This is all about me. I don't care about or want to help you."
Well guess what. If someone posts with that tone, then you will find me challenging you. I will challenge you to back up your words with reasons. I will challenge you to back up your statements with photos of yourself doing it.
I originally came to this forum because, what I found were others, willing to help me to understand. They offered polite and reasoned critic and advice. They offered examples which I could emulate or not as I saw fit. I will not let that feeling of helping, of explaining, of assisting another, to go away.
I don't care if your a Traditionalist or an Anarchist. If you are not able to step outside your own Ego, to stoop down to help and assist another kilt wearer, then I am sorry for you.
The Wizard of BC is going to be here for the good of the kilt. Period.

This was the best part of a great post Steve!

This thread has all been pretty interesting. Personally I wouldn't wear a fedora with a kilt, but I have to say that Steve looks pretty good in that fedora and leather jaket. In fact, if it's raining, I might wear one, too.
