Proper hose with the PC tux

I'm going to be dressed to the nines in my Prince Charlie Tux, fly-plaid, etc. this weekend and I have a question. What hose to wear. I have the usual cream coloured, normal, nothing fancy. A pair of dark blue hose , hunter green hose and brown hose, all the usual ones you buy online. I also have a pair of heavy weight knitted ones with the fancy designs knitted into the front. They match the fishing sweaters you can buy.

Are the knitted ones to casual to wear? The fold over thick at the top and look good with flashes.

Oh, the tartan is a Black Watch.

I'd personally wear the bottle green or cable knitted ones.

I'm sure you will get some STRONG opinions about your plain cream hose.

I would suggest wearing either the green or the blue hose. Please don't wear the white/cream hose!

May I make a couple of suggestions?
1. There is no need to call the jacket in question a "Prince Charlie Tux." It isn't a tuxedo or dinner jacket at all; rather, it is a Prince Charlie coatee...or just a Prince Charlie!
2. Skip the fly plaid. They really aren't necessary and tend to spoil your "look."

Any of the options you've listed, except the brown, would look alright.
I'm not against white or off-white hose, but I don't like off-white/cream/light khaki worn with white, as I assume your shirt will be.
What color are the cable-knit hose? Red, we can hope?

I agree with you Sandy (as well as with many other members) - the fly plaid is superfluous with evening attire, and the so-called, "Prince Charlie" is just a simple coatee based upon Regimental mess jackets...that's all.

Go with what Sandy mentioned, anything but white/ecru/cream hose! Nothing screams "rental look" louder than white/ecru/cream hose! Red and black, red and white, or navy blue and tartan green diced hose would also look wonderful with the Black Watch tartan. Try House of Cheviot's line of diced hose. Solid coloured hose would of course be fine as well, perhaps a more vibrant colour that contrasts with the darkness of the Government tartan such as, tartan red, claret, or brick red. House of Cheviot also makes a superb line of kilt hose in solid colours, either in the Rannoch, Lewis, or Harris styles. Good luck!

Probably too late for this weekend, but the best rule is: daywear - solid colour, evening dress - diced/tartan hose. Give the fly plaid to your wife for use as a shawl next winter....Robbie

to all who answered, thank you. The heavy hose are cream in colour. What I don't understand is if the cream hose are so hated, why is everyone dressed in them in the photos you see online? Or are they white and I can't tell.

I haven't decided on the blue or the green, both match the tartan.

In general white/ cream hose are the mark of a rented outfit.

There is one picture on here somewhere of a registered user in cream hose with a cream colored cable knit sweater. He looks smashing.

It isn't that you "can't" wear cream or white hose; they are inexpensive - you'll see lots of pipe bands in them as well- but in general cream/ white hose don't detract from any kilt, but they don't do anything positive for it either.

With your Black Watch I too would suggest either the green or blue hose you already own. If you have time and funds, claret (deep red) is a popular solid color hose choice for dressier outings. Depending on what your lady is going to be wearing you might complement or contrast one of her colors with your flashes, or not.
