    Wearing the Belt

    Hi to All,
I have seen quite a few pictures of the belt being worn a couple of inches below the upper hem of the kilt, others being worn level with the upper hem....could someone please tell me which is correct?

    Re: Wearing the Belt

Like most other aspects of the kilt, I imagine it's personal preference.
Unless it's part of a uniform. Most of us are civilians, we don't have to contend with the gig line.

    The answer is, yes.

The belt will sit on top of the narrowest point around your waist, or find it's way there. That may or may not be even with the top of the kilt.

If I'm wrong about that, I apologize: I'm not a kilt maker.

    Re: Wearing the Belt

On looking throughout my photos I can't really see my belt in most of them but i think I tend towards having it at the top of my kilts. I know on older style MOD kilts that have a higher rise they can go right up to your ribs when worn correctly so the belt would seem to be worn lower down.

My best bit of advice would be to disregard all of that and wait for one of our experts to appear.

The general rule of thumb is that you should see a bit of kilt above the belt, if it's a regular kilt.

    Re: Wearing the Belt

Bugbear is totally 100% right. Once you start moving in your kilt the belt will move also and it will move to the narrowest part of your body. The other variable is whether you are ultra skinny or a man of substance.

    Re: Wearing the Belt

I've also noticed the belt can get pushed up a little when sitting, in addition. But I have read several of the kilt makers talking about the belt sitting on the waist that way. I'm not an expert!

    Re: Wearing the Belt

A proper kilt will flare just a bit where the waist band is sewn in at the top. This being the case, the belt should end just below this point, revealing a narrow strip of kilt above the belt. While it's true that the belt may work it's way to the narrowest part of the wearer's waist, it should really be worn at the appropriate place on the kilt, which with a properly fitted modern civilian kilt, should be at the "true" waist.

    ...just my two cents.

I think most folks would agree that the belt should be worn level with the upper hem. I think most of the photos you've seen of them being worn some inches lower than that likely have more to do with the belt just slipping down during the day.
