fun with modern kilting
Ok friends, this about non-tartan contemporary kilts and how best to wear them for casual and possible office days.
I don't own one of these kilts, but I would sure like to see how forum members wear them. I'm curious about what types of leather shoes, hiker/walker shoes and socks, shirts, sweaters and jackets. How do you folks put it together?
And because on the Canadian prairies we have this thing called WINTER (and I mean COLD -30C) what types of coats, and leg wear do you suggest?
And when I purchase my modern/contemporary kilt and put my modern look together, I will post my photo.
Have fun with this, everyone.

Re: fun with modern kilting
Only talking about casual and recreation clothing in this. I basically would like to wear the clothing I already have and use the canvas kilt I have in place of shorts, or in place of jeans or cargo pants, with hose or heavy knee-high socks. I've worn hiking boots, assorted shoes, and sandals with this kilt. We have this long, extremely hot thing we call summer down here.

Again, to be clear, I am not talking about office wear, and in my mind, the canvas kilt would not be appropriate in the first place. A different materiel, perhaps so, but you usually have dress standards or codes in offices: respect.

Thanks Bugbear. First, I have memories of eating lunch in the hot summer of south Arizona (+105F and next to zero humidity). Thanks for your photos. And when I speak of "office" I'm not talking suit and tie or the "corporate" look. More like casual Fridays, Dockers and sport shirt type look. Something like that.

Wow ... -35 Move from the Prairies to the West Coast of BC.... I just got a utilikilt from a guy who was given to him for his birthday and it was too small for him. I got a brand new Utilikilt for $120.00
I do wear a Traditional kilt most days and now I wonder how to dress with this one.
Kilts and the wearing of them become very addictive.... even at -30. Maybe you could buy a battery operated warmer for the really cold days.

Re: fun with modern kilting
I lived in Edmonton for quite a while and while my knees got a little chilly now and then I never had any trouble being kilted in the winters.
Here's a few looks I wear regularly

Re: fun with modern kilting
Based on your parameters, for really casual, I think a cargo kilt works well and I would just treat it like a pair of baggy shorts. For the office or dressing up a bit, I'd rather go for something like a Utilikilt Mocker or non-tartan trad style wool kilt.
For a very casual look, I like my original Utilikilt, scrunched down kilt hose with Canadian army parade boot, and a tee shirt (un-tucked).
For a something a bit smarter, I have a Stillwater green shadow tartan. It is made of wool but the tartan pattern only comes out in certain light, so it mostly looks solid coloured. This I always wear with a sporran.
With a solid coloured kilt kilt tailored in a more trad style, I think a patterned shirt and/or an Argyle sweater is a nice complement. Because of the higher waist I would usually tuck in my shirt. With a long sleeve button up shirt and/or sweater I might wear my hose up with leather shoes. A vest with the shirt could also look nice... I think their are some photos around of Panache with a Mocker, shirt, and vest looking sharp as usual. Alternatively, hose down with parade boots for a more informal look with a short sleeve button up shirt or polo shirt (still tucked in though).
As for jackets, I'm of two minds. If the weather is reasonable, wear something that has a shorter waist so it doesn't cover up your kilt and look sloppy. If the weather is cold, wear something warm and to H3LL with how it looks
Speaking of the cold, thick hose and lots of layers on top are a must. If the wind is getting your knees you can even roll the cuff up over them. You can also wear "kilt johns," which are long johns that only go down to the bottom of your thighs. Furthermore, a wool kilt would probably be best though I could imagine leather blocking the wind really well...

Thanks for your pics, guys. Keep 'em coming. I like the use of vests, scrunched socks and hose, boots and shoes, and different types of shirts and jackets. Great photos. Great suggestions. Great help.

Re: fun with modern kilting
You know, I've been, or had been, using the plain leather sporrans with the canvas kilt because it doesn't have pockets. I'm not sure how well that works... I can see how good pockets would help a lot in a contemporary kilt, but maybe a contemporary sporran might be interesting, as well...
