Source for Solid Color Wool Fabric

I have found several excellent sources for tartan fabric right here on XMTS, but I was wondering where to get solid colored cloth. I'd like a navy blue or a medium grey fabric in 16 oz wool twill, but haven't had any luck. I did find one at Hamilton Dry Goods, but it's bright blue. I'm after something a little more subdued.

    Thanks!

They have grey and black. I'm not sure about navy. Perhaps in a lighter weight.

Sydnie, I used to like you until you posted that link. How did you know I needed another supplier for my addiction?

Black And Sons is where I got the Heavy Weight Hymo, which was suggested by Barb, to do the fell area and aprons of my kilt. Also put it in the top apron of my canvas kilt because it is synthetic fiber, and seems to hold up real well in the washing machine.

Pendleton is the USA's premier wool, you can get yard goods as well as clothing:

If you can ever go to the Mill Store in Oregon, or in Camas, Washington, the selection is staggering.

Another, an EBay store, in England, featuring many lovely fabrics. This is where I got the beautiful Harris Tweed for my cape, in my album here. Wonderful service, delivery here in the USA was fast.

Closer to you in Iowa, the Amana mills used to have very nice wool yardage, too.

Please understand that the heavy weight wools you get from B Black and Sons, Woolrich and Pendleton are felted wool (usually called Melton) and are very different from hard worsted wool tartan. You can get twills that are not felted but only in lighter weights in my experience.

You can get solid colour cloth woven by Dalgliesh just like tartan or Marton Mills also sells it.

Re: Melton wool - Will this work for a kilt?

Re: Marton Mills - I've just ordered some tartan from them, but I only noticed solid black on their website. The grey shadow has an underlying (jacquard?) check to it. Am I missing something? I'm going to check out Dalgliesh. Thank you all!

Certainly not! You can get a softly-rolled lapel out of Melton, but you'd never get it to pleat.
