    Kilt-making "porn"

Sorry if this has already been posted, but I just stumbled onto this really nicely put together video on the kilt making process - not incredibly informative, but very entertaining.

    How a kilt is made

    Re: Kilt-making "porn"

Nicely photographed but really annoying music! I suppose a nice bagpipe soundtrack would just have people rolling their eyes

Now, about those buckles and straps. . . at 3:32, and again briefly at 5:32, you can see two buckles placed in a vertical line within inches of each other. I'm not talking about waist and hip buckle placement -- this seems to be two waist buckles right next to each other. At 6:20 there's a glimpse of the double straps that must go with this closure design. Anybody know how that is supposed to work, any advantages, etc.?

Oh, and whoever was in charge of continuity needs firing LOL there are all sorts of steps obviously out of order, most noticeably when they attach waistband and later show several operations prior to waistband. But overall it is an interesting look at the "commercial" process.

It was an interesting video, but I could have done without all the many effects, a little distracting.
The one thing that perplexed me was that it said that a kilt could be made in 8 hours, most kiltmakers on here suggest anything from 20 -25 hours is a reasonable time for a traditional kilt, I've no idea how they could do it in a third of that time!

    Re: Kilt-making "porn"

I expect that there would be materials for the lining etc. already cut to the approximate size required, all the items such as the buckles found, reinforcement for the straps to hold them, the holes punched - so that although the kilt might require only eight hours 'on the day' some preparation has already been done but is not being counted.

I have had people be sniffy about the cost of a garment they want knitted - claiming that it could be done in half a day.

I just look askance and ask if that includes shearing the sheep.

Found this short video on how the threads are put together to make the tartan pattern. Interesting to see.

I agree! My first kilt that I made took me about 3 weeks... that was with working just a few hours a day, and sometimes not getting to work on it at all. It was a very interesting video though. better than some on Youtube that had to do with making kilts.

And about using pins, I used them when I thought I needed them (especially on the pleats). I guess there is really no right or wrong way to use them. It's just if you feel you need them, use them

Yikes! After all that no pleat shot!!???

And what's with the pins? My kiltmaker (Keith Kilt School graduate) NEVER EVER uses pins to make a kilt....
