No mention of kilt in dress code, Edinburgh

We are contemplating going to the MacLaren annual clan dinner at the end of November in the Royal Burgess Golfing Society's Clubhouse and was looking at their website. I noted the following..

    Smart Casual Dress

Shirts with collars and sleeves; polo shirts; sweaters; tailored trousers; tailored shorts no longer than knee length and no shorter than 8 cm above the knee when kneeling; appropriate knee or calf length socks; and shoes.

    What! no kilts?

They are very specific about tailored trousers and shorts!

Better measure my shorts then! and do I wear hose and flashes with my shorts!

Time to break out the Ghillie shirt at the back of your wardrobe then Chris. I am sure that would go with a nice pair of Bermuda shorts and some Lewis hose.

I do love golf club rules and regulations: they make some excellent and very amusing reading! Then again; everything I know about golf I learnt from P G Wodehouse... much to the disgust of two retired Colonel's I held up being ahead of them in a particularly slow foursome today.

Just what is it with some Scottish golf clubs?

I think I would interpret this as you may wear a kilt, but since there are already standard guidelines on the length and fit, and those guidelines conform to the 8cm above the knee mentioned here, they did not bear a repeat in the rules.

Take a picture of yourself all decked in your kilt and send it to the gold club, with the title "SmartER Casual Dress".

A clan dinner at a golf club in Scotland with no kilts allowed? Surely that must be a mistake... have you contacted them to see if it was an oversight on their part?

    Chris.
It looks like those are the regular clubhouse rules... We cant after all have you turning up in one of those ghastly track suits now can we...

Im sure for a dinner more formal would be more than acceptable...

Re: No mention of kilt in dress code, Edinburgh

I don't think it would be inappropriate to call or email and specifically ask about the suitability of kilts.

On a somewhat separate note, every event invitation I've ever seen from our local St. Andrews has always included dress code for both kilted AND unkilted attendees.
