    Smile What to wear?!

Ok, so I am attending a wedding in May (early evening ceremony) and the couple are perfectly fine with me wearing my kilt and finery. On the other hand, I know that it may be in poor taste to be so finely dressed (Black argyl jacket and vest, formal sporran, and regular tie) if there is a chance I could "out shine" the principle guests such as the parents. It will be a suit and tie semi-formal wedding.

If the bride and groom say go for it should I go ahead? Much a-worryabout nothing?

If it's a "suit and tie" wedding, this sounds perfect. You're not going to "outshine" anyone in formality, except of course for the fact that wearing a kilt makes you automatically look twice as dapper as everyone around you.

But really, what you describe is perfectly equivalent to what everyone else will be wearing. It's not like you're wearing a PC or doublet, for which that might be a concern.

Aye wear your kilt, I am thinking, as you describe it as a suit and tie wedding that perhaps the Black Argyll is not the way to go. I would think to match the formality of others a day wear jacket ie. tweed instead of black barathea might be the right way to go. Something like this

    or this

That is what I would do anyway. If you do not have another jacket then by all means wear the black one.

    Re: What to wear?!

I went to a French wedding, where there was no dress code, dressed in rather formal daywear. I wore a black barathea Braemar jacket and waistcoat with metal "antiqued" buttons because at the time it was the only kilt jacket I had. I had lots of compliments and the priest even came over and thanked me for "making the effort" and saying that very few people do that these days. Little did he know that it was no effort at all for me!

I'm of the opinion that, what ever you wear, you can't "outshine" the bride or groom because it's their day and ALL the brides and grooms I have seen have been positively radient. No way you can outshine 'em.

I agree, I think worrying about outshining the bridal party is mostly nonsense; how you act at the wedding is much more important. I do however, think it is out of place for guests to wear long white dresses to weddings (which I've seen), but most of us on this forum would not do that. If you are better dressed that other guests, don't worry about it; that you took the time to dress well is a compliment to the bride and groom. Wearing the black jacket is the equivalent to wearing a nice black suit, which is very appropriate for an evening wedding.

This being an evening ceremony, why would a black Argyll jacket not match the formality of others? It's the equivalent of wearing a black suit, isn't it?

Thats as may be, however I doubt every attendant would be wearing a black suit. Nonetheless the black barathea argyll is suited to formal occasions, to my mind anyway. As I said if it were me I would wear tweed, perhaps a dark tweed but a tweed nonetheless.

Wear your black Argyll. The suit as you described it sounds perfect. If you don't show up in a Prince Charlie and fly plaid, with a dirk on your belt, you don't have to worry about outshining the groom.

Thanks guys. Black jacket and bespoke Graham tank it is! This will be my first time wearing them to a "formal" occasion.
