    Weather

I don't know what the weather is like where you are, but here it's freaking cold!

When I got in my car to go and do my weekly shopping at 11:30 this morning (kilted, of course) the temperature was -5°C (with a wind chill taking it down to -16°C).

There's a cold spell with high winds all over Europe at the moment and it's expected all next week.

    Re: Weather

We here in Chicago, though, are having a very mild winter with the temperature hardly ever going below freezing. We had the one year anniversary of a terrific blizzard that occurred last Feb 2 and that managed to paralyze the entire city....silly from my perspective because we should be used to stuff like that by now.

I heard that you all were having a bad time of it and can sympathize...we're used to it and have the gear in the back of our closets all ready to go...we grumble but we go about our business. I worry more about things like your plumbing freezing and bursting. Experience has shown that can happen and you won't know until the pipes thaw sufficiently to restore the water flow. Hope you all duck the bullet on that one because it's a royal pain.

Here too. I can't turn on my taps in the mornings because they are frozen (even though I have the outside pipes plugged in)... Commonly have ice in the sink.

A buddy of mine Facebooked yesterday that the water in his toilet was frozen.

In Japan, there is no central heating... So when I come downstairs in the morning, my living room is around 4ºC on most days and I can see my breath.

Bloody miserable! :-( I miss central heating.

It's been depressingly warm and sunny here. Last year we had several good snows and plenty of cold. This year we've had one flurry and temperatures mostly in the 50s and 60s F. Trees are budding already and jonquils/daffodils (which the old folks around here call March Flowers) are about a week away from blooming. I like cold, so this so-called winter has been a disappointment. Send me some of your snow and I'll box up some heat for you.

I live about 40 miles up the road, and about 1,000 feet higher, so this is pretty much what we've seen so far as well. But only I know the reason that this is happening.

Last Spring I was cruising the Sierra Trading Post site and spotted some snowshoes on sale for less than half regular price. I've wanted snowshoes for years, and after the huge snows we had last year and the year before, I went ahead and bought them. My wife told me that this was going to ensure that we'd never see snow again.

Some day I'll learn to listen to her...

But, Bill - What kind of weather would you have had if you hadn't bought the snowshoes? Far sighted forward planning on your part, I think.

    Re: Weather

In Denver, we just had a snow storm with the potential to be a record breaker. The most snow we've ever gotten from one storm in February is 14.8 inches, and this one dumped 17 on us! Pics will be coming as soon as my son and I are finished with our snow fort.

Partially sunny and 4C. No snow on the ground and streets are clear. This is remarkable weather for Toronto.

    Re: Weather

We are in the 50+ degrees F range with some rain sprinkles on and off today, but we are bracing to recieve the remnants of the big storm that just blew out of the Rockies and nailed Denver. Although we did have a couple dustings of snow this year nothing has stuck yet. That could be changing soon, though.

Hiker, I already have my snowshoes left over from when I lived in Wisconsin, along with a set of Xcountry skis I bought there too. Have yet to have the chance to use either in the 3+ years we have lived here in Kentucky, as all the big snowstorms seem to split and go either north or south of us and hit everybody else.

    Re: Weather

    The Ice Age has returned.

20:00 - Cold - No snow - Complete cloud cover.

    20:15 - 1" of snow - Still cold - No clouds - A moonlit winter wonderland.

21:30 - About 20 teenagers having a snowball fight, up and down the road.

22:00 - Snowing like it is the end of the world - Hard and driving - Teenagers gone - So much snow, all footprints are covered.

If this global warming carries on, I will have to turn the heating up.

    Regards

    Chas
