First post of 2012 and a Question!
Greetings to the Rabble!
I realize I've never really been that active on here, but I disappeared last December and just recently decided to become active on here again. I haven't been kilted much, I'm ashamed to say. My lone kilt is a Stillwater Economy, and while its a great piece for the money, it leaves me wanting a bit more. I'm still trying to lose a bit of weight, so I'm holding off on buying something new until then, but I have been trying to decide on my next purchase.
I know there's a fair number of members on here from my own State of Florida, as well as other warm climates. What have any of you found to be the best kilt for warm and humid weather? Lightweight wool? Shorter yardage? How does PV wear in July? And lastly, does anyone have experience wearing an Altkilt in Florida?
Thanks to the Rabble in advance. You're a great bunch of gentlemen and ladies!

PV is excellent. If you're living in Florida (despite the recent spell of cold weather) you might give a nicely made PV kilt the edge over a wool one.

I would look at a semi trad from Rocky at USA kilts.Their light well built and
at a good price and have the look I feel you're going for.All that being said a 4yd box pleat in a 13oz could do you well also.

Re: First post of 2012 and a Question!
My own preference (and, therefore, prejudice! ) is for wool. A 16 oz. medium weight wool seems fine to me whenever I've been in hot climates. And wool is wool! You'll have to pay more for wool than for PV, but it's the real deal when it comes to kilts.
On the other hand, I don't know what your plans are for being kilted. If you're into some kind of kilted activity that is likely to damage a kilt, you probably consider PV since it'll wash and it's cheaper to replace.

Re: First post of 2012 and a Question!
Thanks for the feedback gentlemen. I don't kilt up often, and although I'd be more likely to with a bit nicer kilt, I still don't see myself wearing it daily.
I tend to lean more towards wool simply because its traditional, as well as the qualities that thescot mentioned, but also because its nigh to impossible to find a PV kilt in Lamont tartan. In fact, although I can trace family back to several clans (Lamont just being the most direct/certain) they are all small enough clans that one never sees their tartans in PV. If anyone knows of a place to get one I'd be all over it though.
As far as PV kilts go, I know Rocky does good work, but does anyone have experience with the PV kilts from buyakilt.com?

Can't help you with Buy A Kilt, but I just got a PV from Heritage of Scotland and am very pleased. At $70, it was well worth the risk.

Re: First post of 2012 and a Question!
A week ago last weekend, Feb 4, I was at the Sarasota Highland Games in my USAKilts 5-yd 16 oz wool kilt, House of Cheviot hose and Ryan Ross Bonnet in the sun with the temperature about 80. I was comfortable. Being a "snowbird", I have not been here in the summer so I can't advise about that time of the year. The 5-yd wool kilt is significantly cooler than a wool 8-yarder that I have worn on Labor Day weekend in northern VA.
A 13oz 5-yd wool kilt from Rocky just might be the ticket. You check out his tartans on the USAKilts website.

Santa Wally, now you're making me feel bad for not going to the Games! I thought about it, but life's been busy recently. Thanks for the insight though; that was indeed a pretty warm weekend for this time of year.

This was our first time to the Sarasota Games. We learned about the games when we were in Sarasota for a January gathering of the Palm Tree Santas (Florida Santa's organization). We saw advertising for it at a fast food restaurant as the weekend was over and we were leaving town, decided to check it out and add another event to the ones we've attended.
