    Another kilted + wedding thread

Reading through the various wedding threads, most seem to deal with someone attending a wedding kilted or as a groom/groomsman and if the bride and groom...ok if the bride was ok with it.

In my case, my mother is getting married this fall and has requested that my brother and I wear our kilts when we give her away. What I am looking for direction on is how formal we should be. The groom and groomsmen will all be wearing tuxes so I assume we would go with a PC? It will be an afternoon wedding outside.

Since we will be the only ones kilted, I figure we shouldn't go overboard and keep everything else fairly subdued. The tartan we will be wearing is the MacMillan Hunting modern. Should we go with a solid color hose in this instance? Patterned? Does it matter at all? I have a small assortment (black, a variety of blues and greens). The wedding isn't until August so I have plenty of time to order something different if there are suggestions.

I am also looking for additional feedback on a few sporran makers. I have been in contact with 3 about having a custom sporran made from my wolverine pelt and am having a hard time narrowing it down to one. (W.E. Scott and Sons, Janet Eagleton or Kate MacPherson) I am still torn on if I want a full mask sporran or not. After exchanging some pictures with the sporran makers, it seems that the cartilage was left in the nose and since it has settled in a somewhat smashed position following the tanning process, they might not be able to be reshaped into a decent looking nose. In that case I would forgo a full mask.

I am fairly familiar with W. E. Scott's sporrans, but haven't had much exposure to Janet or Kate’s work. If anyone has experience with their products, I would love to hear...or see.

    Thanks,

    GMC

    Sounds absolutely A-1! Congratulations!

To what level will the groom be dressed? Will Mom wear a tartan sash? Part of me is even thinking that this may be one of the few occasions when fly-plaids might just dress it up right as you take her up the aisle, especially if she's wearing a sash to match!

We're sure going to want pictures for this one!

Yes, or black Argylls with black bow ties and 3-button vests.

    Yes. Red.

Send a PM to turpin here. He's known for top-notch mask sporrans.

You could try a Tux shirt, Puffy ascot and a short tux jacket.. Very Victorian looking. and fairly comfortable.

I'm not sure what you mean by a "short tux jacket." I'm afraid I won't like the answer, either.

Well here is a visual example of your proposed tartan paired with a matching tartan 5 button waistcoat, Black Argyll jacket, bow tie, and custom hunting style sporran made by Wyvern Leatherworks (link at bottom of this page)

I think any of the hose choices you provided would be fine, except for the black, which I am not a big fan of. I have a pair of the House of Cheviot Hunting Scot full argyle hose and think they are a great pairing for this tartan if you are considering that option. Mine came from Dunadd Trading company (also link at the bottom of this page)

Congratulations to mom! and best of luck in your search.

Sandy, for some reason that made my day.

For the OP... seeing as this is an afternoon wedding, I strongly suggest a black argyle and 3-button vest as mentioned by piperdh. If there are certain "accent colors" for the bridesmaids and groomsmen, then a tie and flashes to match that.

The PC is nice and all, and yes, tux appropriate... but I just cannot visualize it in a daytime setting. It just doesn't sound or feel appropriate.

Re: Another kilted + wedding thread

I appreciate all of feedback everyone has given.

It looks like the groom will be wearing a tux and the groomsmen will be in suits, so the Argyll sounds like the way to go. I'll need to wait and see what they are doing for accent colors and make some choices at that time. I may be back with more questions. :-)

As for the suggestions regarding the sporran makers here on the site, I'll follow-up with each with the details of what I am looking for.

Thanks again! Pictures to follow....in a "few" months.

Re: Another kilted + wedding thread

The PC jacket and 3 button vest is a bit smarter than the Argyle jacket and 5 button vest, although its usual to wear it for evening, it is very common to see the PC worn for daytime weddings.

I've never worn my 3 button vest with my Argyle jacket, its not a usual thing to do and I'm not sure how that would look but I guess a 3 button vest goes with a tux jacket so it could be possible.

What sort of vest and tie are the groom and groomsmen going to be wearing? Do you want to match closely with them?

If they are going to wear a 5 button vest and tie then you can go with the same look and wear an Argyle jacket. If they are going to wear a 3 button vest and bow tie, then the PC jacket would fit in more closely.

For hose, I dont like full argyle hose for daytime but I think I'm in the minority on this site I prefer a solid colour hose. Also a fly plaid is a bit over the top for me but it seems to be popular, I find it can make the kilt outfit look a bit costumish

But these are just my opinions and no need to take them seriously

I'm not a big fan of WE Scott and have never seen Janet or Kate's sporrans in person (though they do look great on the web). Also consider 2 of our sponsors and budding US based sporran makers:

Another fine sporran maker is Turpin (as someone else mentioned):
