oh no oh no oh noooo

I washed my black cotton kilt - and put a few other dark items in with it.

    And a tissue.

I now have an almost 8 yard kilt, several shirts, a couple of tees, random underwear and socks - all covered in a fine layer of tiny white fibres.

    oh woe is me.

The kilt fabric is slightly brushed, like peach skin - maybe the fibres will come off in a decade or two.

Maybe it will just look like a grey kilt when it is dry.

Maybe I should just make a new black kilt.

Ha! I haven't done that for over 30 years (my mother seemed to always leave a tissue in her pocket somewhere). But I still vividly remember the nightmare of trying to remove tissue particle from all my clothes. A good lint brush should really help.

    Ah the dreaded tissue syndrome!

They normally come out with careful scraping.

I just picture those tissues hiding in some dark corner of a pocket snickering and rubbing their mischievous hands together waiting until wash day

A lint roller may be a good bet.

The fibres are well and truely embedded in the nap of the fabric. I tried pulling one off with fine forceps - it is twisted into the fabric.

I don't think they will be going anywhere.

It is a good excuse for making another kilt - I do have the rest of the original piece of fabric, and several lengths of black wool, so no shortage of materials, and it is some time since I made the first one.

There has to be a bright side to this.

The Wizard did that one time while visiting his mother-in-law and using her washing machine. I was not there, but I remember the story of him spending hours with a tweezer cleaning up the appliance.....I don't think my mother cared about his clothing at that point!

The answer to your problem is of course a magic marker and three weeks of 18 hour days. I like the Sharpie marker best. Be sure to tuck the excess fabric under your right leg and pull firmly with your left hand. Strong reading glasses help, or even better, a jeweler's loop. One last tip...Be certain to tuck your tongue into the corner of your lips. It helps to prevent cussing.
Scotland is only 1/5 the size of Montana, but Scotland has over 3,000 castles and Montana has none.
