    Family Members

Is there anyone else here with members of their family that don't understand your Kilting?

Not your spouse, your family. Your mom, dad, brother, sister, aunt, uncle, grandparents, etc.

I get no support from my family at all. It's always "Do you have to wear your kilt?"
No matter how many times I explain that I just love wearing it, they always complain.

On the other hand, I get tremendous approval and support from friends and strangers. I can live with that.

I think this is something that is near universal, at least in N. America.

In one case, I think the family member might fear that he is going to be forced to wear a kilt, and he perceives the kilt as a negative way etc.

I can say I've never really had any issues with family members, including 'extended family' that I'm not related to. I'd guess this is because they've never expected me to be 'normal' anyway.

My mother thought it was great. Unfortunately, with her passing, there is no one else left in my family who sees the kilt as a positive or normal thing. My two brothers, even though they know and respect our Scottish heritage, take a dim view of the kilt. They enjoy making disparaging comments about it.

    Cheers,

Ha! Ha! This is my experience as well. I can honestly say that there is no one in my family who gives me any grief whatsoever. Even in my wife's family.

    Cheers David!

I can sympathise with you to a certain extent. My wife's family are descended from the Robertsons of Struan (Clann Donnachaidh) in Perthshire and I must admit, are fairly knowledgeable in regards to their family's genealogy, so I have been perfectly 'safe' with wearing Highland dress around them...they get it!

    Kind regards,
