    And We Were Worried !?

In some earlier threads we discussed the possibilities, and the pros and cons, of a Christian-themed tartan. Some folks brought up the possibility that such a tartan might have difficulty getting "approval" from the Scottish Register of Tartans (SRT).

But, given this morning's introduction of the following three very politicized tartans by the SRT (see links below), I think the sky is now the limit! What does the rest of the rabble think?

I changed my signature. The old one was too ridiculous.

Wasn't the top one (agua) the plot of the latest James bond movie?

And that nuclear one is kinda trippy, I'd like to see it as a kilt.

Aside from the Yamaguchi Tsutomu tartan being ugly IMO, I think these are great ideas for tartans which might bring awareness to some important issues. Since there are certainly tartans for 'causes' I do not agree with why shouldn't there be these for notions I do support? I'm sure we'll see more.

UK Intellectual Property Office Reg No.: 4022092 Date of Reg: 24th October, 2011

Registration notes: The Havel tartan portrays an endless succession of prison cell windows struck through in red, protesting the persecution and imprisonment of writers of conscience in the knowledge that free expression is an essential component of every healthy society. It is named in honour of the late Vaclav Havel, the dissident playwright and co-author of Charter 77, the landmark human rights declaration for which he was imprisoned for several years, only to lead the ‘Velvet Revolution’ that peacefully overthrew communism and installed him as Czechoslovakia’s president. Charter 77 was also the inspiration for Charter 08, the petition demanding the end of one-party rule in China for which author Liu Xiaobo is currently serving an 11-year sentence. Permission to adopt the Havel name was graciously granted by his wife, Dagmar Havlova Veskrnova, with assistance from the Dagmar and Vaclav Havel Foundation VIZE 97 and PEN International, the worldwide writers’ association promoting literature and defending freedom of expression.

An asymmetric tartan and I have to say, just plain ugly.

I wonder if Mr Giles Jackson wears a kilt or if this is just another of a long line of money making tartans. How long before we see one highlighting chronic flatulence and another celebrating social ineptitude? Just how many causes can one person espouse in a lifetime.

    Regards

    Touche!

I find these tartans, especially the registration notes, distasteful ... to say the least.

I'd need sunglasses and the curtains closed.

Black and yellow patterns have always made me feel dizzy.

it looks to me as though this guy is just out for publicity. Who would wear these ugly tartans in the first place? I am really surprised that the tartan authority is registering these.

    Publicity = Money

The trouble is that the Scottish Register of Tartans does not have the right to pick and choose.

    If the fee is paid.

    It has a unique name.

It is possible to weave it.

And neither the name nor the events it commemorates would be considered an assault to public dignity.

Then they have to register it.

    Regards

    Chas

I share your surprise. I am also disappointed in the SRT. I believe they should have, at least, worked with the designer to tone down the rhetoric of the registration notes. The content, such as it is, makes one wonder where the SRT draws the line.
