MacPherson hunting tartan

Here is a kilt I just shipped out made in the MacPherson Hunting tartan. I've always admired this tartan myself.

This cloth is Lochcarron's 16 oz strome range. Pleated to sett.

One of my favorite tartans, very striking in its simplicity and the uncommon and prominent grey element. It works beautifully for box pleats! (That's a fine job of tapering in the pleats along the narrow blue stripes.)

The grey in the tartan was actually white at one point during the clan's history, and this has indeed been confirmed by Cluny, as well as Clan Macpherson historians. I would love to have a custom run of this tartan woven by D.C. Dalgliesh, and probably will make that happen some time in the future. You hardly see this style of sett any longer - usually only in some of Cluny's old kilts, and those worn by the older, native Scottish Clan Macpherson Association members.

Matt: Nice tartan, beautiful kilt. I like both the MacPherson Hunting and the Clan Weathered. It would be tough for me to decide between the two. In the former the blue stripes visually "transition" between the gray colors and the orange, and to me make the tartan. Some lucky person is getting a very nice kilt.

Well done as always, Matt! I absolutely adore the Macpherson 'hunting' tartan, especially in the 'ancient' colours offered by Lochcarron. From a distance, the red, blue, grey, and black, all seem to blend together (optical mixing) to create a rather nice purplish-pink hue, which I have been told by kin in Badenoch, that this particular tartan blends quite well with the purple heather of the moors and surrounding hills. I completely agree. Yep, I'm quite partial to the Breacan Glas - for obvious reasons!
