My wee visit to Edinburgh Castle

Ok, I know I haven’t been very active around here recently, there’s no real reason for it other than life getting the better of me and all the usual stuff unfortunately.

Recently I had the pleasure of a day trip to Edinburgh castle with the cadets recently and along with the task of controlling 30 odd teenagers while there I got some time to have a quick look round myself and take some photos which I thought some of our members here would like to see.

from the ouside, just up from where the busses were parked

An old Scottish army uniform of some sort

Old 603 (City of Edinburgh) SQN RAF pipers uniform

And a close up of the info

    Some Sporran's

Another old Sporran and Sgian Dubh

And Last but not Least and old (and slightly worn) Saltire

Not A whole lot of photo's but I did have my hands full for the best part of that day

Nice pictures Jordan and its good to hear from you again.
Taking the air cadets for a day out makes a good excuse for visiting Edinburgh Castle. We Scots tend to take our history for granted, it must be many years since I was last inside Edinburgh Castle.

Thanks Alex, It was unfortunately my first Visit to the castle, but I would like to go back sometime when I'll be better able to appreciate it.

That first pic with the uniform looks likes it's the London Scottish uniform with it's hodden grey color.

Correct, an old uniform 'of some sort' from a unit that bloodied the Huns nose on Halloween in 1914

I believe you fell in the It's-Always-There trap. That's the reason why some New Yorkers have never been to the Statue of Liberty or Florentines having not seen Michelangelo's David or Bavarians having not visited Neuschwanstein castle. It happens to all of us because we tell ourselves, "I can go any day I want." Sadly for some, that day never comes. Glad you got out of that snare. Thanks for sharing your photos.

*** -- It is so true. I was born and raised in Chicago. I have seen more of this city due to out of town visitors, than my own volition. Anyone visiting Chicago let me know ... I'd love to show you around!

You are right, I fear had it been up to me and not a cadet event I still wouldn't have gotten round to it.

This is a London Scottish uniform. You can just see the label there on the glass. The kilt and hose are "Hodden Grey". What's really interesting is the sporran: I've seen loads of London Scottish sporrans and the ORs' sporran have a plain brown leather cantle with stitched matching brown leather rim. But this one has a knob! And almost looks like it's made of wood or summat.

This is an awsome collection! The sporrans Left to Right are

    1) an early (1820-1830) 79th Highlanders sporran with the distinctive white-over-black layered fur
    2) pre-1881 92nd Highlanders ORs' sporran
    3) 79th Highlanders "Levee Dress" Officers' sporran
    4) 78th Highlanders "Levee Dress" Officers' sporran
    5) early 93rd Highlanders Sergeants' and Officers' sporran with a different arrangement of tassels as became standard later
