    Advice on an homage tartan

    Hello to the Rabble...
For my pleasure and my children's education, I am collecting tartan/kilts of the various families which comprise our larger family.
This has brought me to my Granduncle Macinally. Things I know:
    1. When he was born
    2. Where he was born
    3. When he immigrated
    4. Whom he married into
    5. Actually met him once...I was very young

What I cannot do, is pursue this course of geneology further. His place of birth is in the lowlands, just south of Buchanan territory. Based on other threads here, his immediate family being ensconsed in this area, the logical tartan (as an homage to his signifigance to our extended family) would be Buchanan. However, I am aware Macinally's connection to MacFarlane. However, their historic territory is slightly north west of Buchanan territory. For my purposes, would anyone here think it disrespectful to obtain the Buchanan, become a member of the association under respectful pretenses and wear the kilt?
Or, should I pursue another option?

    Thanks for any information,
    Domehead

Domehead, I think that you are over-thinking this. Buy it, wear it - no one will ever know. Unless you make a point of telling them!

    Regards

According to Collins guide to Scots Kith and Kin, MacInally is a sept of both MacFarlane and Buchanan (around the area of Loch Lommond). Either tartan would be acceptable.

IMHO, this is an excellent approach.

To all those whom responded, thanks very much for your input. Specifically Mr. Thorpe, I've read this sentiment on this board many times from trusted members (such as yourself). The pitfalls of Geneological research being what it is re: Scottish culture / history, I must focus my moneys where the largest family matronage dictates. Some of our peripheral families, although held in high esteem, may appear marginalized on occassion. However, I feel the same as you: Yes, I can wear what I want. But, recent convention suggests a familial connection. Therefore, if I can establish a credible connection and exercise a modicum of respect, then perhaps I should do so.Thanks again, to each of you. I will be ordering from Matthew A.C. Newsome soon.

Both Clan MacFarlane and Clan Buchanan have clan associations or societies. The Buchanans appear to have more than one. Contact is a couple of mouse clicks away.

Well, I would'nae choose any of these because they are no different with re: historical signifigance, than the Liddell I designed for our family. Liddell is a historically ancient Scottish name, but is not a lowland "clan" nor are we a prominent lowland family, not does we have any historically proven connections as a sept to any recognized clan. Etymologically and DNA, we are seperate and distinct from Little, who do have their own signifigance, and therefor thier own tartan. I designed a Liddell as an homage to my family patronage. The Macinally tartan, although handsome, originated under the same pretense as the Liddell tartan. However, different than Liddell family, Macinally family has a clearly established historic connection to both MacFarlane and Buchanan. Both of which have at least Victorian claims to specific tartans.
