8 yard PV vs. 5 yard wool

I'm sure this has been asked before but here it is anyway. I'm looking at purchasing either an USAkilt 8 yard PV or a Scotweb 5 yard wool, that's the budget between $220 and $250.
This Kilt will be used for everything from pub nights to Robert Burns dinners.

I had asked here before about a Kilt or Kilted skirt for my wife. On the great advice I got here I purchased her a kilted skirt from Scotweb she loves it.

My wife and I attended our first Celtic Celebration this passed weekend, she loved it. She would like another kilted skirt only kilt length this time. She fell in love with the Holyrood tartan that the Sacramento Pipe band was wearing. So I figure, if she gets another skirt I should get another kilt.
I am really leaning toward the USAkilt.

Hmm, that's a tough choice. If it were me, I'd have to go with the 8 yard PV kilt. Even though I'm not a huge fan of PV (the weight is equivalent to about 11-oz wool, which just really seems too light for my tastes), I think I'd still rather have 8 yards than 5 yards for a kilt that will do the kind of duty you're talking about. The look of the pleats is very different (better) with the extra yardage, and since PV is stain-resistant and washable, it seems like the right choice for pub nights. So you really get the best of both worlds there.

*edited to add: that second photo is a really sweet shot. You should consider framing it!

I've owned both, and I honestly prefer my 5 yd. wool kilt over the PV version. I actually like the 5-yarder more than ANY 8 yd. kilt! It's such a well-balanced garment with the reduced yardage. Here's a pleat-shot pic. The tartan is US Army in 16 oz. wool:

Have USA Kilts PV semi-trads and USA Kilts 5 yard wool kilts. Apples and oranges. Orchids and roses.

Only solution is one of each....serious....

Keep in mind there may be customs fees, PLUS FexEx's ridiculous "Brokerage" fees to pay if you're bringing something in from overseas. This may effect the price quite a bit.

I have two 8yd PVs and two 16oz wool kilts, one 8yd one 4yd box pleat. As Ron said, they're apples and oranges. I LOVE the freedom from worry about
staining the PV, but nothing beats the swing of 8yds of heavy wool. My 4yd wool is what I wear to St. Andrews' Society meetings, or any place I'll be driving/sitting a lot.

I don't think you're going to lose here, which ever way you go, but if it were me I'd probably go with USAKilt's 8yd PV.

Thanks for info on your wife's kilt. I will check the Scotweb site. But, it is hard to find something made up in the Taylor tartan.

Just me, but as the owner of 7 USA Semi-Trads, I'd say go with the USA Kilt.
Order of the Dandelion, The Houston Area Kilt Society, Bald Rabble in Kilts, Kilted Texas Rabble Rousers, The Flatcap Confederation, Kilted Playtron Group.

    8 yard pv

I was not aware that USAK made their semi traditional kilts using 8 yards of material, I thought it was more of a 5 yard kilt with strap and buckle closures.
