What tartans are "Notable"?
The Saint Andrew's Society of Jacksonville has a collection of tartan banners that we take to various Kirkin's and other events throughout the year. This collection, primarily of clan tartans donated by members, started small but has recently grown to nearly 80 individual tartan banners, each embroidered with the clan it represents.
If you are interested, you can get an idea of the collection here:

Recently, I've had the notion that we should include some "notable" tartans in the collection....for example the Shepherd check is "notable" for being the simplest of tartans, while Ogilvie is "notable" for being the most complex.
So...which other tartans are in some way "notable"? They may just find their way into our collection!!

I would add in the Culloden, in the original colours, as one of the few tartans that we can be sure existied at the time.

I would suggest the the Rob Roy/MacGregor would be, along with your Shepherd Check, the simplest of Tartans.

How about the XMarkstheScot.com tartan. It knows no blood, family, race or nationality; only those who love the kilt!

Excuse my ignorance but what makes the Ogilvie tartan the most complex of tartans?
Shoot straight you bastards. Don't make a mess of it. Harry (Breaker) Harbord Morant - Bushveldt Carbineers

I agree that the sett is as simple, but consider that you have to dye the red bits. Theoretically, with the Shepherd, you only need a few black sheep in your flock!

Is it inappropriate to point out that the Scots - including those of us of Scottish descent - have never lacked for black sheep?

I think one of the notable tartans is Campbell (or Black Watch or whichever Clan you care to attribute the tartan too).

Considering my Hamilton ancestors were likely chased out of Scotland o.e step ahead of the hangman...not inapropriate at all. I think the Isle of Skye is pretty notable....Black watch, which you undoubtedly have...Stewart is a striking tartan...and probably one of the most recognizable by a layman. I concur with Xmarks too...a Tartan created for no onther reason than tartan itself drew us all together. Congregated by plaid...grooovy!
