Wearing a kilt in a more formal setting

    Hey group,

I recently went on a cruise with my wife's family and wanted to wear a kilt for formal/fancy night. At this time, I have only single color kilts but they look really sharp. I had tried on all of my dressy shirts and I just end up looking like I should be a waiter or should have a set of bagpipes.

I am looking to dress up my kilt without necessarily going with a full PC jacket. I am a DIY kilt maker and am currently working with tartan to make my first non self color kilt. Does anyone out there have any advise on how to dress up my look?

    Thanks
I don't always wear a kilt, but when I do, I've made it myself.

Check out this thread. It's an excellent guide to highland formality.

Ok give us a hand here. So, if you were going to a "do" just what sort of outfit would you wear, if you were not going to wear the kilt? Suit? Blazer? Sports jacket? More casual?

I happen to live in Seattle where there is only one jacket required restaurant in the city. Everyone is a little bit more casual here. Heck, everyone pretty much wears jeans to a nice night out. I would be looking for something sport coat or slightly more casual. I just dont want to look like I should be serving the drinks instead of enjoying them

OK thanks,"Slightly more casual than a sports jacket", it is then. Depending on the weather, a pullover(sweater) with or without a tie, depending on the event and if the weather is warmer than we see in Scotland then a plain or tattersall patterned collared shirt with or without a tie depending.

I recently did a Western Caribbean cruise and wore a kilt for formal night. There are, however, no "formal police" on Carnival. The only people we saw turned away from the dining room were a few people wearing shorts.

I, too, am a casual person - don't even own a real suit. But I do have a couple of quality sport coats and a nice tuxedo. I chose to wear one of my kilts to the dressy dinner but I did not have a formal kit, so to speak - not even close. I donned a solid black kilt with a dress shirt - studs and links - with a (mostly black) herring bone jacket, bow tie, black hose and black shoes with small buckles. (I also wear these shoes/loafers with jeans.) My wife wore a long black skirt with a silvery jacket and pearls so, in a slight way, we matched. We received many compliments and a couple of requests to pose for pictures.

Fun evening. I will repeat with a similar outfit - soon.

    When is your cruise?

If there is enough time we could get you into something like this.

here it is with a tie.

Want a vest? Matching or contrasting?

The cruise is over, I decided to wear my kilt on a different evening, but I wanted to get some input for the future as I need to update my wardrobe

Okay so you wanted to wear your kilt on a cruise. Did you? Or did you wear something else?
