My first full day outing in a kilt!!!

So we went to Dixie Stampede (a dinner theater owned by Dolly Parton in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee) Yesterday for an award ceremony with the Girl Scouts. I decided that this would be a good time to get my "baptism by fire" for wearing a kilt in public with no other reason than wanting to. Needless to say, I was the only person kilted in the building. Aside from a few questioning glances, it went well. I must say that I really enjoyed it and will be doing it more often.

After the show we went into Gatlinburg for a little stroll. I was NOT accepted as well there. A lot of double takes, laughter, sneaking pictures, and even some wolf whistles. One of the reasons for wanting to go to Gatlinburg was to stop in at the shop where I bought my kilt and see if they had some flashes. I experienced similar treatment here, IN THE SAME SHOP THAT I BOUGHT THE KILT FROM (not from the shop but the customers in it).

It's all good though! I did not let any of that get me down. Just a typical response from the uneducated idiot masses.

One of the reasons for wanting to go to Gatlinburg was to stop in at the shop where I bought my kilt and see if they had some flashes. I experienced similar treatment here, IN THE SAME SHOP THAT I BOUGHT THE KILT FROM (not from the shop but the customers in it).

Maybe it's too early, and I need another coffee, but this defies logic to me... At least you haven't been deterred by the opinions of the masses.

One piece of advice though; hitch up that kilt and show us some knee!

Yeah, I pulled it up higher just after I saw the pics. I had just drove for 2 hours and just didn't realize it had sank that far down.

There were a lot of young people in town. Probably due to some local colleges having had graduation the day before. The people in the shop was the most curious. Your going to shop in a celtic store but have something to say about a man in a kilt in the same store? Makes no sense to me. I thought at first that I might have been imagining it but my family noticed too.

Keep in mind that as a place built upon the very definition of "tourist trap," Gatlinburg tends to attract more than its share of less refined individuals. There are plenty of nice folks there too, of course, but I suspect that Jeff Foxworthy gets plenty of his jokes from Gatlinburg...

Well, I hate to hear about the sneers, but unfortunately I guess that's part of world we live in today. Don't let it deter you from donning your kilt. Thanks for sharing.

I would like to think that maybe you misinterpreted some of the stares. We all get them from time to time but when I have approached the starers they almost always say that they are appreciating the look. They are looking because it is a little unusual, that is all. I have rarely ever gotten a discouraging remark even in places that you would not normally see a man in a kilt.

Take heart Ep, last weekend my wife and I spent five days camped in the infield at the Taladega NASCAR race. I wore a kilt every day, walked all over the infield and pit road areas, and survived with nary a snide comment to my face. Behind my back maybe, but not to my face. Did get several good comments, one female ask "the question" and three fellows said "I should be wearing mine". One young military man said he would be wearing his if he weren't on duty.

Now that event is about as "southern" (read redneck) as you can get and if I can get away being kilted with a sleeveless shirt and sandals in a crowd of approxamately 70,000 folks there I can go anywhere. As for pictures, if I could ever figure out how to post them I would certainly do so. Not been successful yet.

Hi Ep, just wanted to throw my 2 cents in here. Let me say, that it's my opinion that the "comments" were from guys that are less confident than you are, and probably spurred on by their jealousy of your "pluck" (man and a half status) to wear something that looks great, and has THEIR women talking about some one other than THEM.

To me the "comments" by these guys are just like the insecure dog barking at the lead dog. I live in the Tulsa area and find that while I may be getting a few grumbles now and then from a guy or two, it's normally sparked by the fact that the lady they're with can't stop looking, and smiling at me. LOL....LOL... And I know it has to be the kilt, because I 'm not that good looking....LOL... I also find it interesting that in the state that you live in, a whole lot of people are of Scottish origin.

Just this last Saturday I went to a performance at the Tulsa performing arts center, (it was a big deal) and took the opportunity to wear my new wool kilt. It turned out to be a typical afternoon out Kilting, and here's what I mean by "typical".

As I walked into the venue, I noticed that many of the men were busy looking the other way while their "dates" were busy smiling at me...LOL...These guys reminded me of "little" dogs that couldn't look the BIG dog in the eye....It was (and always is) a HOOT. Mean while I certainly enjoyed smiling back, and nodding at the admirers as they smiled and blushed a little as I caught (acknowledged) them "watching". It was also interesting to see how many people were interested in (or seemed to be interested in) eves dropping as I responded to questions about my kilt, and kilt wearing.

So.....rock on, and remember that when you wear a kilt your the lead dog, and (in my opinion) adding to the diversity of humanity, and letting every one know (by your appearance) that YOU'RE your own man.... Stan L.
