Need help chosing a kilt for my son

My son who wore his first kilt (mine way to big) to his final concert two weeks ago now wants his own, that is great the problem is I want him to get a modern kilt (UTKilt) and he wants a Blackwatch. I wear both, but it depends what I am doing, ie a jean situation mod, slack situation traditional. I think it would be more acceptable if he wore a modern kilt to school versus a traditional. What does the rable say?

Let him get what he wants. I would think he is more apt to wear it that way. If he enjoys it he will want more than one anyway and can get the utility style one later if he desires.

Not having more information I'd have to say I'd go with a traditional kilt. I think it's great he's interested. My son isn't but I'm good with that. Last week he asked if we could find him a flat cap in the family tartan. He tried on some flat caps last weekend and really likes them.

For sure... let him get what he wants. Carlo and Elizabeth nailed it, he will wear what he wants.
Buy a UT and it may hang in the closet while he out grows it.

Jerry at Stillwater has several nice beginner kilts at a great prices.
That way he can go to a concert and not soil a expensive heavyweight.

So far I seem to be in agreement with the group. Clothes are a very personal thing especially for teens. Let him pick what he wants. I think TJ Kelly also has a good idea of Stillwater Kilts Thrifty kilts. They are not wool tanks, but are IMHO worth the price asked. At the price of a thrifty he could get more that one and at roughly the a pair of name brand jeans if damaged the crying would be minimal.

Kiltwearing to me is a highly individual thing and very exiting to explore.
Allow your son to do so.

In that situation I would go with a traditional kilt.
Remember I'm a long way away, but around here a trad. Kilt is recognised as male garment by most while UTKilts would be seen as a skirt, womens clothing.
Obviously that might be diffrent across land and ocean.

MM, I understand what you are thinking (and I'm pretty sure that you're alined with the consensus here) but, when it comes to dealing with our children, we best lead by example. So when it comes to the idea that you like X and Y and he prefers Y and X, you're not on opposite pages, you're on opposite sides of the same page and, to me, that's a good thing. You've taught him to appreciate his heritage and embrace the kilt but, more importantly, you've taught him to think for himself.
