Is there a a photo or a style that has strongly influenced you?

I was just wondering along the lines of personal taste, what or who has influenced your ideas and ideals of what you wish to portray as "Highland attire"? Modern take, "Traditional Highland Civilian Dress", your own functionality and whims.......I think you get where I'm going.
For me I'm all about functionalism over fashion, and not taking an absolutionistic approach on that my vision is the only vision of what is appropriate. I try to keep the "To each their own" mentality just because it doesn't benefit me to get all riled up over clothing, regardless of how strongly I may feel about a specific thing, or tradition, or principal......but I digress. Functionalism over fashion....there is a Painting of I believe Willie MacDuff is the gentleman's name in the painting. And as I have been told, the painter actually had to.........clean him up or tidy him up a tad to be more presentable. Now regardless as to how often he was or was not kilted in his actual life for me is beside the point. Its that I like the idea of the more rugged appearance, and the utilitarianism of the kilt its self. So, if there is a picture that has influenced you greatly, please do find and post it along with one of yourself.

I should also probably add "Duncan" (Hamish Clark) from Monarch of the Glen series has strongly influenced my casual wear for when I'm on the farm in the warmer months of the year.

I saw a photo of Willie Duff once, it looked like he'd spent the night in his kilt under a hedge somewhere. 'Rugged' I suppose is as good an adjective as any.

This photo has influenced me the most in my Highland attire - this photo has so much in it .
it has inspired me to love the daywear attire. I am still in the works to make this happen but I am trying .

These days, I'm feeling "less is more." I started a thread about it a while back: http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/f...an-more-79023/ I'm not sure that I could attribute the look to one particular photo... I'll think about it

Really like the idea of not having to wear a sporran, fiddle with opening and closing it, fish around inside. Vests sort things out very nicely and show off more tartan.

OK, I think if I had to trace my kilt influences, I think I'd go first with Xmarks in general, and Jock Scot in particular. That man has the patience of a saint when explaining the subtle nuances of THCD to those outwith the Highlands. I'm more on the trad side of things, but I should also give a shout out to Alan H (the father of the X-Kilt) for his "kilt up and give'r!" approach, especially when it comes time for less traditional attire.

In terms of images, I'm feeling the Duke of Edinburgh (Prince Philip), who is #26 on GQ's list of the 50 best dressed men in Britain for 2014 (see also the Huffington Post commentary, which mentions the kilt). He's always well turned out in his Highland attire and has a remarkable ability to mix neutrals (greys, lovats, muted colours) and subtle patterns. Very traditional, but definitely "less is more." He's often seen with a brown leather day sporran and black shoes, which I'm going to be trying out because my lass got me an unworn, plain, brown, MoD sporran for Xmas. He also goes for more stripped down Highland jackets and seems to enjoy wearing a few different tartans.

Huffpost. Notice the subtle pattern on his jacket/waistcoat and plain hose. He's also rocking a decent size knot on his repp tie.

JAMD. Sweater (jumper) under tweed for a more relaxed look.

Dailymail. No tie or jacket for a casual---but still smart!---kilted look with a sweater.

Argenta Images. Formal kit in a Balmoral doublet, which doesn't require a jabot. I got my hands on a Balmoral, but it was a pinch too small and I sold it to Nathan

The Duke of Edinburgh's son, the Duke of Rothesay (Prince Charles), is a chip off the old sartorial block. He does, of course, have his own personal take on THCD, which is still "less is more" but with perhaps a bit more panache in his choice of daywear sporran, hose, and pocket square than his father.

Here they are kilted together at a full formal function. I like the clean lines of their jackets and have a civilian mess jacket to emulate the look. (from creagdhubh's Photobucket)

Did Rothesay perhaps inherit Edinburgh's Balmoral or do they both have one?

I like the darker colour of his tweed jacket here, though I can't seem to get into patterned hose tops. I have a hunting sporran too, but it is black instead of brown and I wear it on a strap instead of a chain.

I must admit, after seeing the Balmoral doublet, the one Nathan wears, I'm in the process of saving up for one from Rocky. Probably a bottle green or navy blue velvet.

His sporran seems to have held up well over the years.
