Need advice on a good casual kilt

I'm in the market to get a new kilt (or five), but I'm not really interested in paying a Godly sum of money to get one. A little back-story: I generally wear kilts very casually, usually with a kilt belt, day sporran, henley T or long-sleeve shirt, bulky socks, and boots. I prefer more traditional-styled tartan kilts, with buckle closures, fringe, and generous pleats. I'm looking for something that well-constructed, suitable for everyday wear, and won't break the bank. Something under $200 would be nice, as if I spent more than that, they would probably have to bury me in it after my wife saw the bill . I know that I put down some pretty narrow specifications, but does anyone have any suggestions as to where I might procure a kilt that 'fits the bill'?

    Hello

May I recommend Stillwater Kilts good kilts at good prices. I have several in both wool and acrylic and never had a problem.

Wherever you make your purchase enjoy your new kilt!

I have a kilt from Buyakilt.com that I think is 8 yards with fringe - what is the fancy word for that ? - straps/buckles & a liner that was under $100 after shipping . It looks spiffy & if it gets wrecked while wrestling a rabid owlbear it's no big lose !

Tasty, are you happy with your kilt from Buyakilt.com? I read many reviews on their site, but frankly, I get a little skeptical when nearly ALL of the reviews are 5-star. Again, I wear kilts very casually, usually around folks who have never seen a kilt in their lives. I ask because my wife balked at me spending $199 on a kilt from Burnett's & Struth's, and I liked the way the Budget 8-yard kilt from Buyakilt looked. And the price. The price is nice, too.

what does "wearing it casually" have to do with the quality of the kilt. I wear my jeans "casually" but I buy quality and jeans that fit.

The B&S sale kilt is wool, 13 or 16 oz. The buyakilt is polyviscose or polyacetate. I have both types and for out in the yard, etc the polyviscose wins as it's washable. But the 8 yard is pretty heavy on a hot day My 4 yard wool is more comfortable for "around town" and hiking. It was also made to my size, while the pv kilts are no hip or length customizations typically. YMMV.

I suggest you encourage your wife to reconsider. The B&S kilts are quality kilts, made to fit you, and not some imaginary average person. The prices are actually Canadian dollars, and the kilts are less expensive in US dollars. Compare the sale price to B&S's normal price for a casual kilt, or a USA Kilts semi-traditional. Think about that. Go down to the Burnett's & Struth forum and read about the $199 casual kilt sale from last spring. If you go this route, try to go for a five yard kilt, they're really nice.

I too find my wool B&S kilts fine for warm days. The acrylic kilts are to me uncomfortable on warm to hot days. Of course, the acrylic Pakistani kilts are inexpensive and perhaps preferable for owlbear wrestling. Have you ever seen owlbear claws? They'd rip a kilt to shreds.

Pakistani kilts should, in theory be preferable for yard work and other manly tasks, but I'm a wuss and hire all that done, so can't advise on that. If you like to get stinking drunk and spill stuff all over yourself at the local sports bar, or even Hooters, then definitely go with a Pakistani kilt. As an aside, keep in mind that when you get so drunk you have to hang onto the grass to keep from falling off the world, a kilt can be a very immodest garment. Clown pants are more appropriate attire.

If you decide kilt wearing is just too bizarre for you, you'll have a better chance selling a B&S kilt than you ever will a Pakistani kilt. What's your size? I have a Pakistani kilt I'd like to pass on to someone.

Wool or acrylic, the general public won't know the difference. Put your swagger on and you'll get nothing but compliments.

Another great deal is the USA Kilts casual kilt. They too are made to measure. The polyviscose fabric is stain resistant. They'e priced between Pakistani kilts and B&S sale kilts. I really like mine, and likely will order another. I'll also be placing an order this week for a USA kilts semi-traditional.

    J. Higgins, here in Kansas, also offer polyviscose kilts at very good prices, and in tartans not available from USA Kilts, if you want to widen your choices. http://www.jhiggins.net/Scottish_Kilts_Collections.asp

By the way polyviscose, and the acrylic used in all Pakistani kilts are two different things.

Another source for Pakastani acrylic kilts is http://www.midwestkilts.com/Index.html Their offerings are almost exactly comparable to those of Stillwater -- I have kilts from both sources -- and they offer tartans not available from Stillwater, again widening your choices. When I ordered from Midwest, the service was on a par with Stillwater.

Finally, if you decide on a B&S sale kilt, you'll have many choices of tartan. I suggest you consider Chattahoochee tartan. It to me is the tartan of tartans. It has all the common tartan colors in it and will go with anything you might want to wear with it. Of course, I'm prejudiced, having a long association with the Chattahoochee region.

ETA: If it's a concern, because of the way they are made, Pakastani kilts will make your butt look big.
